WHAT'S DOING
AAUW to meet
The AAUW (American Association of University Women) will meet 5:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at First Congregational Church, Fifth and Juniper, Brainerd. It is a potluck dinner. Members are urged to bring friends.

GriefShare support group

GriefShare support group will begin a new series at 7 p.m. Monday at Lakewood Evangelical Free Church, Baxter. GriefShare is a 14-week series that will end Dec. 14. Cost is $15. The DVD seminar features well-known authors and counselors for those who are grieving the death of a loved one. After the presentation we discuss the DVD and share our own stories. A workbook is provided for further study. Grief is different for each individual and hits you when you least expect it. The most important part of GriefShare is the hope it offers and helping move one from "mourning to joy." Lakes and Woods Garden Club

AITKIN - The Lakes and Woods Garden Club meeting will be 7 p.m. Monday (due to Labor Day) at the Jacques Art Center in Aitkin.

The program will be a discussion by members about their successes or failures in their gardens in 2009. We will also discuss changes to our bylaws such as changing our club name to Lakes and Woods "Garden" Club and any other changes that anyone would like to bring up.

We should also encourage all members to make plans to be at the October meeting when we vote on our bylaws since 2/3 of the members must be present to make any changes. Refreshments will be served by Cindee Anderson and Sue Stebbins.

Disabled American Veterans

The monthly meeting for DAV Crow Wing County Chapter No. 22 and Auxiliary will be Thursday at the Brainerd VFW club. Chapter officers meeting will begin at 6 p.m. The general membership meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

Motley Area Historical Society

MOTLEY - The Motley Area Historical Society will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Motley City Hall Complex. The meeting will discuss and make final preparations for Motley's genealogy classes scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Motley City Hall Complex and again that evening at 7 p.m. at the Motley United Methodist Church.

American Legion to celebrate birthday

The American Legion will celebrate its 90th birthday with a rendezvous planned with social hour from 5:30-7 p.m. and dinner from 7-7:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Brainerd Lakes Area Calligraphers and Scribes

Brainerd Lakes Area Calligraphers and Scribes, a new group, is forming and welcomes anyone interested in learning about the lettering arts from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Brainerd Public Library. The future goal of this group is to correspond with people who need encouragement by combining lettering arts and writing skills. All levels are welcome. PEO CJ

Chapter CJ of PEO will meet at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hostesses are Caren Bedard, Judy Swenson and Shari Holland. The program will be new yearbooks by the program committee.

Ray's Promenaders Square Dance Club

Ray's Promenaders Square Dance Club will dance on Friday with Abe Maier calling Plus at 7:30 p.m. and Mainstream from 8-10 p.m. The club furnished potluck lunch will be hosted by the Doshes.

Encore Arts Association

Encore Arts Association will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lakes Area Senior Activity Center, 803 Kingwood, Brainerd. Gail Walsh will show her China images on the screen and bring ATC cards to exchange. Virginia MacArthur is hostess.

WHS class of 1954

The Washington High School class of 1954 will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grizzly's in Baxter.

The Washington High School class of 1954 will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Legion. All interested in working on the committee to finalize plans for the 55th reunion to be held on Oct. 3 should attend.

Brainerd History Group

The Brainerd History Group will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the excavated Brainerd Brewing Co. site on the east side of Boom Lake. We will be building the pedestal for and installing the marker there. Anyone interested in Brainerd history is welcome. For more information call 820-2424.

Pinetree Patchworkers

BAXTER - Pinetree Patchworkers will meet at 6:45 p.m. Monday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter. Diane Gaudynski will present information about quilting on regular sewing machines. Anyone who is interested in quilting is welcome to attend the meeting.

Ski Gull fall fundraiser

BAXTER - Ski Gull will be hosting its annual fall fundraiser from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at The Lodge in Brainerd Lakes, Baxter. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door and 18 and under are free. A group of 10 tickets are available for $350 with advanced purchase. The night includes food and beverage tasting, silent auction, games and helmets and boots raffle. Test your skills at the Wii snowboard.

Proceeds from this event support the 2009-2010 fundraising goal of $47,000 which will be used to purchase Rossignol ski rental equipment.

VFW events

VFW Friday night dinner will be a fundraiser. Hab and Loren are cooking country ribs with all the trimmings and will be serving from 5:30-7 p.m. or until gone. A freewill offering will be taken.

VFW breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at the VFW Clubroom, 309 S. Sixth St., Brainerd. Cost: $5.

Alpha Chapter No. 23

The Alpha Chapter No. 23 will meet 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Masonic Hall. There will be refreshments following the meeting.

Chapter DV, P.E.O.

Chapter DV, P.E.O. will meet for its autumn opening at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the home of Jacque Glas. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served. The program committee will give an overview of the coming year.

VFW Northern Post No. 3839, Jenkins
