CAREER
Urologist joins Lakewood Health System

STAPLES - Dr. Keegan L. Maxwell, urologist of Adult and Pediatric Urology in Sartell, will now be consulting at Lakewood Health System every Tuesday.

Before his practice in Sartell, Maxwell offered community-based urology and privately practiced in Spokane, Wash. Maxwell finished his doctorate at the University of Washington and completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Urology at the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine.

At Lakewood Health System, Maxwell will be focusing on adult and pediatric urology, including urologic malignancies, urinary incontinence, kidney stones and other urology conditions. Maxwell is a member of the American Urological Association.

Maxwell served as chief resident during his residency in the Division of Urologic Surgery at the Washington University in St. Louis.

Schuety joins Nextera in Baxter

BAXTER - Nextera Communications announced Sarah Schuety recently joined its marketing department as graphic designer and marketing assistant.

Schuety is a graduate of Liberty University and Alexandria Technical College. She brings nearly four years of graphic design experience and most recently worked in the marketing department at PrimeWest Health in Alexandria.

LHS Healthcare staff attend conference

STAPLES - In September, 11 healthcare professionals, including two surgeons from Lakewood Health System, attended the Update in Critical Care 2008 conference presented by the Center for Excellence in Critical Care and sponsored by the University of Minnesota.

Lakewood was represented by on-staff surgeons Dr. Sandra Hanson and Dr. Patricia Mahoney. Other health care professionals also attending included Cindy Denning, director of nursing; Deanne Blake, ICU coordinator; Connie Wells, ER nurse manager; Traci Formanek, Cheryl Chouinard and Karla Jenkins, nursing supervisors; Stacy Grossman, ICU RN; Kirsten Smith, respiratory therapist and Jennifer Strickland, education coordinator.

At the close of the conference, this multidisciplinary team from Lakewood was able to identify new guidelines and best practices for the care of the critically ill, assess the outcomes of implementing such guidelines, and discuss new research findings impacting patient care.

Fiske joins Music General

Cindy Fiske joined Music General in Brainerd.

Fiske has more than 12 years experience in dance. She was a member of Stage Door Performing Arts where she competed and earned honors in competitions around the country. She performed at events and venues around the world, including appearances in Denmark, Sweden, and Russia. Fiske brings training and experience in ballet, lyrical, jazz, tap and character. She is a graduate of Hamline University and after being a life-long seasonal resident of the Brainerd area she moved here permanently this spring. Fiske will be teaching in Staples and Aitkin and working with the Brainerd Teen class.

Consultants earn reward, attend conference

Tastefully Simple consultant Ann Scheinost, Garrison, earned a reward from the direct sales gourmet food company and consultant Shannon Janco, Baxter, attended a national conference.

Scheinost earned the reward by achieving sales goals for August. Scheinost reached $1,300 in product sales during the first 13 days of the month. Janco attended the company's national conference in Minneapolis and participated in trainings and learned about the company's fall-winter product line.

CLC Dental Assisting receives grant

The Minnesota Dental Foundation has awarded a $3,000 grant to the Central Lakes College Dental Assisting program in Brainerd.

The grant will be used to defray expenses associated with serving WIC and Head Start programs.

Roehl receives Signature Award

Bill Roehl, cabinet designer of Nor-son Inc., received the Signature Award from Crystal Cabinets.

The Signature Award is the top regional award that an individual can receive within a five state area and is given in recognition of sales volume. Nor-son ranked in the top 10 of more than 600 Crystal Cabinet dealers nationwide.

Brainerd graduate gains promotion

Nancy Stromberg, a 1990 Brainerd High School graduate, moved to Alaska in 1990 and in 1992 went to work for Safeway Foods. Stromberg went from clerk to deli manager to assistant manager workin in stores in Kenai, Soldotna, Juneau, Nome and Seward. She will be manager of the Safeway Store in Dutch Harbor on the island of Unalaska, home to the TV show "Deadliest Catch." Stromberg is the daughter of Elsie Stromberg and Jerry and Lil Stromberg of Brainerd.

Friday Morning Coffee planned in Little Falls

LITTLE FALLS - Friday Morning Coffee, the networking event of the Chamber of Commerce in Little Falls, is open to chamber members, employees and guests.

The event is from 7:30-9 a.m. Sept. 19 at the chamber, 200 First St. N.W. Announcements and introductions will be at 8:15 a.m. Hosting this month is The Royal.

Business After Hours planned Sept. 24

Business After Hours, a networking event for Cuyuna Range Chamber of Commerce, is planned from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 24 at Traditions Mini Golf with Jeff and Paula Losleben, on Highway 210 just east of Deerwood.

Lakewood Health System honored

STAPLES - Lakewood Health System's leadership team and employees were awarded with the 2008 Top Leadership Team in Healthcare for small hospitals by HealthLeaders Media.

The award was presented by HealthLeaders Media Editor Jim Molpus.

Lakewood Health System's President Tim Rice thanked each of Lakewood's employees in his acceptance speech noting the team award recognizes the efforts of everyone in the organization.

In December of 2006, more than 600 employees moved into the new $42 million building that now houses the hospital and one of five Lakewood clinics.

WORKSHOPS

Boiler operation workshop planned

The Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College will be the site for a six-hour boiler workshop from 6-9 p.m. Sept. 22 and Sept. 25 in the Business and Industry Center at CLC.

Fee is $79. Instructor is Dave Horn. The deadline to register is Monday.

Food manager training planned at CLC

A Serving It Safe review course will be from 5-9 p.m. Sept. 23 in the Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College, Brainerd.

Colette Pohlkamp is the instructor.Tuition is $70.

Welding course scheduled

The Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College, Brainerd, has scheduled a 48-hour welding course Sept.23-Oct. 30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The class meets from 5:30-9:30 p.m. in W100.

The fee is $399, including materials. Instructor is Craig Weigel.

Food manager training planned at CLC

A Certified Food Manager course will be 5-9 p.m. Sept. 25 and 30 and Oct. 2 in the Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College, Brainerd.

Certification is required in most Minnesota food establishments.

Participants are trained and tested through the ServSafe Serving Safe Food Certification course. They will learn about potentially hazardous foods and safe food handling practices, the HACCP system of food safety, setting up standards and completion upon passing the required exam.

Colette Pohlkamp is the instructor. Tuition is $160.
