Summer school success for Brainerd students Brainerd School Board Staff Writer Many Brainerd students found success in school during the summer months, Brainerd School Board members learned Monday.
Marlee Larson, director of the Area Education Center, told school board members Monday that the AEC had 228 Brainerd High School students referred to the AEC's summer credit recovery program. Of those, 221 students attended classes from June 16 to Aug. 4, completing 308 total semester credits.
Of those, 219 students who otherwise would not have been able to graduate did so, Larson said. The remaining students who didn't complete every class they registered for this summer have the opportunity to return to the AEC this fall to enroll in night classes, Larson said.
"I'm very confident these students will be successful 100 percent," Larson said.
In board action, the board approved the following new certified employees: Danielle Bartz, Forestview eighth-grade teacher; Kate Bjornson, BHS family and consumer science teacher; Phillip Dewey, BHS special education teacher; Amy Haag, Harrison special education teacher; Sarah Nelson, Forestview fifth-grade teacher; Ahnna Wing, part-time Garfield Reading Recovery teacher and part-time St. Francis Title I teacher; Brea Chrisinger, Nisswa kindergarten/first-grade teacher; and Crystal Magnan, Garfield kindergarten teacher.
The board passed a resolution calling for the Nov. 3 school board election. There are three four-year board terms and a special two-year board term up for election. Four-year term candidates include Howard Brewer, Nancy Cross, Todd Froemming, Tom Haglin, incumbent Ruth Nelson and Chris Robinson. Two-year term candidates include James Hunt, Theresa Knierim, incumbent Bob Nystrom and Tom Peterson.
