Based on preliminary estimates, Brainerd residents' tax rates in 2009 could be about the same as in 2008 and may even go down a little.
The Brainerd City Council on Monday by a 6-1 vote approved a preliminary levy of $4 million, about $103,000 less than was recommended by the city's finance department. City Administrator Dan Vogt said a $75,000 reduction in the 2009 levy would leave the tax rate about the same as it was in 2008, 44.64 percent.
In making his motion to set the tax levy at $4 million, council member Mark O'Day said the council could reduce the levy further if needed. However, once the preliminary levy is set it cannot be raised.
Voting against the $4 million for 2009 was council member Bob Olson, who said the levy could have been reduced by up to $300,000.
The city's Truth in Taxation hearing will be at 7 p.m. on Dec. 8 at Brainerd City Hall.
