Flannel shirts and hats were the order of the day for people setting up displays at the Paul Bunyan Festival. Bone-quaking temperatures of 48 degrees and blustery winds were quite a change from Thursday's 84 degrees.
30 years ago (1975)
Otto Heikkenen, a city alderman for the past 15 years, resigned at the last Brainerd City Council meeting. Heikkenen, 71, has been serving in the Safety and Public Works Committee.
40 years ago (1965)
An unidentified Brainerd man spent a harrowing 45 minutes locked inside the Brainerd bus depot last night. The man said he waved frantically at passers-by in an attempt to get their attention but they just smiled and waved back.
60 years ago (1945)
Freezing temperatures for tonight were forecast. A drop to between 25 and 30 was forecast for tonight. Formal opening ceremonies for the new Greyhound bus terminal at Laurel and Fifth steets to be held Saturday, Oct. 6.
80 years ago (1925)
Brainerd tourism season is proving to be a longer one this year than in the past. The local tourist park is still open and operating the same as at mid-season with a very good number of patrons stopping there every night.
