LOCAL BRIEFS Girl Scout registration night slated Tuesday
Girl Scout registration night will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Brainerd High School cafeteria.
New Girl Scout troops will be created. Adult volunteers are required to form new troops.

Brainerd transportation panel to meet Tuesday
The Brainerd Transportation Advisory Committee will meet at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers at Brainerd City Hall.
United Way Chili Cook-off is Wednesday at Westgate Mall
Interested chili tasters can sample more than 50 chili recipes and then vote for their favorite. Cooks are judged by a chili panel for first, second and third place in three divisions: corporate, nonprofit and restaurant/caterer.
Tickets for chili sampling will go on sale at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday with an award presentation at 12:30 p.m.
The cook-off kicks off the Crow Wing County United Way's fall campaign. Cost is $5 a person for all the chili sampling and a beverage.
Region Five board to meet Thursday
STAPLES -- The Region 5 board of directors will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Region 5 office in Staples.
Vehicle lights program scheduled Oct. 1
Brainerd will be one of seven state locations that will host a Lights on for Safety program where experts will provide free inspections and replacements of most vehicles' exterior lights.
The program will be conducted 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 1 at Central Lakes College in Brainerd, sponsored by the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers and industry suppliers, the State Patrol, Lakes Area Automotive Industry Council and the Salvation Army Brainerd Lakes Food Shelf.
Vehicle owners are encouraged to bring a cash or non-perishable food donation to support the food shelf.
Col. Mark Dunaski said properly installed and functional headlamps often make the difference between seeing a problem in time and avoiding an accident.
Flu vaccine offered Oct. 7 in Brainerd
The Crow Wing County Health Department will offer a flu vaccine from 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 7 at the Lakes Area Senior Activity Center, 803 Kingwood St., Brainerd.
Following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, this clinic is only for those people who are at the highest risk for serious influenza-related complications, including those 65 and older with and without chronic health conditions, residents of long-term care facilities, those ages 2-64 with chronic health conditions, children ages 6-23 months, pregnant women, health-care personnel who provide direct patient care, household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children age 6 months and people displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
Crow Wing County will have additional clinics after Oct. 24 for those who are not high risk.
The live, nasal-spray flu vaccine FluMist is an option for healthy people ages 5-49 who are not pregnant. This vaccine is not subject to prioritization and can be given at any time. See a home medical clinic for this vaccine.
