Open Forum: Letter writer was just wondering
How come if automobile insurance is required for all drivers, we have to carry uninsured and underinsured coverage also?

How come Muslim suicide bombers and hijackers haven't figured out why their leaders don't comply if it is such an honor to become a martyr and they will spend eternity in utopia?

How come Republicans are so paranoid about this president speaking to school kids encouraging them to study hard and stay in school when other presidents have done it?

How come there wasn't a stipulation in the financial bailouts that the CEOs and upper management had to be replaced instead of allowing retention bonuses to be paid to those same people responsible for the catastrophe?

How come eight extra charges are added to our landline phone bill; number portability, Federal subscriber line charge, Minnesota telephone assistance plan surcharge, telecommunications access Minnesota, emergency 911 service, federal excise tax, federal universal service charge and Minnesota state sales tax?

Just wondering.

ELCA members weren't duped

The letter writer who castigates local ELCA church members for not condemning the recently assembly actions issues seems uninformed. He thinks ELCA members and their assembly representatives (60 percent laity) are gullible and easily misled by church leaders. He apparently doesn't know that the ELCA discussions that led to this vote started 20 years ago, nor that the resolutions that mandated an extensive study and conversation before this vote were passed in 2001. He has not likely seen how the study materials outline both traditional and nontraditional biblical interpretations and explain how they can be used to oppose or encourage policy changes. Nor has he seen how this study was set in the larger context of law and gospel theology. It is doubtful he has been to congregational or synod meetings where gays, lesbians, parents and friends of homosexual persons, individuals who have tried reparation therapy, etc. have all sat together with each other in respectful conversation with those who oppose change in policies.

All these opportunities have been open to any who claim to "love the sinner," as he does.

Like many other church bodies, the ELCA is divided on this issue, but not because its members were suddenly and ignorantly duped by some leaders.

His judgmental attitude is a good example of what has turned many Christians to a fuller biblical understanding of God's love for all persons.
