Mary 'Pat' Galligan
Mary Patricia "Pat" Galligan, 74 years, died Sept. 18, 2009, at the University of Minneapolis, due to complications from cancer.
Pat was born on Dec. 28, 1934, the younger of two daughters. She was a Des Moines native and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy and later from the University of Nebraska in 1956 with a bachelor of arts degree in education. Pat taught school in California and Germany where she met her husband, Robert "Bob" Galligan. The couple was married in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1959, lived in New Haven, Conn., and then settled in Des Moines in 1964.
Pat was a lifelong active volunteer and sustaining member of the Junior League of Des Moines for 43 years. In addition, she was actively involved with PEO, Drake's Women's Center and St. Augustin Church. In her later years, she was a member of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Pat enjoyed playing bridge with friends, swimming, fine dining, theater, music and travel. She generously shared her passion for gourmet cooking by creating the perfect meal for every occasion. Pat cherished her time at "The Lake" - a family retreat in East Gull Lake, Minn., since 1969 - where she and her husband graciously welcomed and entertained family and friends.
Those left to cherish Pat's memory are her husband of 50 years, Bob; son, Dave (Sue) Galligan, of Pequot Lakes, Minn.; daughter, Sheila Galligan, of Edina, Minn.; daughter, Susan Kiffin, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; daughter, Ann (David) Jones, of Woodbury, Minn.; six grandchildren, Alex and Madison Galligan, Taylor and Duke Kiffin and Nicholas and Katherine Jones; and sister Sue (Bill) Conyers, of Des Moines, Iowa.
