County jobless rate up 2 percent over last year
Compared to a year ago, the Brainerd lakes area jobless rate rose by more than 2 percent in August.

Crow Wing County's jobless rate was 6.7 percent, slightly higher than the statewide average in August of 6.2 percent.

The state reported six of 11 major industry sectors lost jobs in August.

Minnesota's nonfarm economy lost 3,100 jobs in August, according to numbbers recently reported by the state Department of Employment and Economic Development.

The Minnesota Job Vacancy Survey reported there were 2.9 unemployed workers for each job vacancy statewide.

In terms of industry highlights, DEED reported professional and business services had the worst showing in August, down 3,900 jobs from July.

"While steady losses over the past five months in this sector have been driven by temporary help, the professional and technical service areas, including legal, accounting, engineering and computer design, are beginning to show weakness as well," DEED reported.

Manufacturing losses - 2,900 jobs in August - included hard hit areas of wood products and machinery manufacturing.

Leisure and hospitality had job declines for the third straight month. DEED reports the industry sector is down 1,100 jobs in August.

But there also have been job gains. Trade, transportation and utilities gained 4,100 jobs, which DEED said was "boosted by growth in the retail trade sector. This continued growth bucks the national trend, which shows job losses for nine consecutive months. Minnesota's financial services industry also continues to buck the national trend with five months of consecutive, if small, job gains."

DEED reported five sectors are still showing over the year growth: trade, transportation and utilities; financial activities; educational and health services; leisure and hospitality; and government.

And five sectors in the state were listed for performances that were better than the nation during the year: construction; manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; financial activities; and government.
