Business notes
Ex-police chief is new CLC security director
Ken Dickinson, Pillager, was recently named director of security and safety compliance at Central Lakes College.

The former Waite Park chief of police is responsible for the Brainerd and Staples campuses' security programs. Dickinson had served as interim security director at CLC last April.

He spent 18 months in Afghanistan, where he served as an international police adviser for Dyn Corp International, a government subcontractor. He is also a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was employed by the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department as a 911 dispatcher and seasonal water patrol deputy from December 1999 to February 2009.

Dickinson was chief of Waite Park Police/Police Rescue Squad and Emergency Services Director from October 1970 to October 1999.

In 1978, he acquired a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from St. Cloud State University while working as a police officer. He earned his master's degree from SCSU in 1989.

From September 1989 to May 2000, he served as an adjunct faculty member at St. Cloud State University. He is a Sylvan Township supervisor, serving a four-year term since January.

Nagle is CLC grant writer

Kimberle G. Nagle of LaPorte is the new grant writer at Central Lakes College.

She will coordinate and manage external funding opportunities offered by corporations, foundations, and government sources. Nagle was most recently director of development for the Bemidji State University Foundation.

Since 1997 she has owned and been principal consultant for LaSalle Group, LLC, of LaPorte. She has written proposals, assessment tools, and feasibility studies for several agencies, as well as coordinated fundraising, surveys and training as a consultant.

She served as executive director for The People Connection Inc., in northwest Minnesota from 2003-07, and she was director of outreach and continuing education for the Leech Lake Tribal College at Cass Lake from 2000-03.

She has directed operations related to women's business development in Bemidji and owned businesses in North Dakota and Minnesota. A Bemidji State University graduate, she authored and designed curriculum for financial empowerment - "How to Budget When You Never Have Any Money."

Huss is named CLC disabilities coordinator

Paula Huss of Staples is the new disabilities coordinator at Central Lakes College.

Huss coordinates services for students with disabilities to promote their academic success and ensure equal access to post-secondary education in the least restrictive environment.

Her experience includes working with youth of various ages and disabilities in diverse populations. She has been a case manager, advocate, and youth empowerment specialist.

A licensed special education teacher in emotional and behavioral disabilities, Huss also has and administrative and managerial background associated with charter school operation and staffing contracts.

She came to CLC after social service work in the Brainerd area and employment in a number of educational and business enterprises.

Huss is a graduate of Central Lakes College who earned a bachelor's degree in human services/management from the College of St. Scholastica and a master's in special education from St. Cloud State University.





Jess Olson



Pharmacist joins Garrison clinic and pharmacy

Jess Olson joined Riverwood Healthcare Center as the pharmacist in charge for its Garrison clinic and pharmacy.

Olson worked as a pharmacist for a Merit Care clinic in Thief River Falls. A native of Fergus Falls, she completed a doctorate of pharmacy from the University of Minnesota in 2007.

Fountain joins Northway Construction Services

BAXTER - Denise Fountain joined Northway Construction Services of Baxter.

Fountain has a background in finance, sales and marketing and contract administration, primarily in construction and engineering firms. She spent 10 years with a Houston-based U.S. developer residential contractor. She moved to the Twin Cities and worked first as controller for an engineering and construction firm and then as a sales and service representative for two large emergency vehicle lighting and traffic control manufacturers. Since moving to the Brainerd lakes area in 1999, Fountain has worked in finance for an advertising firm and in contract administration for a construction company.

At Northway Construction, Fountain is responsible for contract administration and office management, and provides support for project management.

OSHA confined space workshop set at CLC

The Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College, Brainerd, will host a workshop on permit-required confined space from 8 a.m.-noon Oct. 7.

Instructor is Joe Casey of Casey Consultants. He will present information on how to comply with OSHA confined-space entry standards.

Going into business class is Oct. 8

The next Central Lakes College workshop on Going into Business for Yourself will be held from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Business and Industry Center on the Brainerd campus.

This session covers all areas of business start-up, helpful advice on how to get your dream off the ground, how to become and stay profitable, including financing your new venture. Follow-up counseling is available to qualified individuals from the Small Business Development Center's team of consultants at no charge to the individual.

Workshop to address new approaches to pain management

Central Lakes College in Brainerd offers a course that will review the pathophysiology of pain and current therapies used in the management of pain from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 8 in room C225.

Topics include current medications, psychotherapy, holistic therapies, and implantable devices. How to access pain management services will also be covered. Instructor is Kathi Henrickson from Ridgewater College. Fee is $35.

Course to assist CNAs planned at CLC

The Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College will be the site for a new pre-healthcare course designed to help Certified Nursing Assistants improve basic skills toward nursing or other healthcare careers.

Session 1 meets from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Mondays and Tuesdays, Oct. 5-Dec. 8. There is no fee. Books and supplies are provided through grant funding and a collaboration of ISD 181 Adult Basic Education, CLC, and Rural Minnesota CEP, Inc.

Session topics include: College Academic Expectations Ð Academic Ethics; Time Management Ð Study Skills; College Reading and Writing; Math for Healthcare Occupations; Healthcare Career Options Ð Job Shadowing; Medical Terminology Ð Professional Expectations; Basic Nursing Skills

Jean Mershon, business specialist, and Kris Jandl, registered nurse, from the CLC Nursing program will instruct.

Participants must meet all ABE requirements (high school or GED diploma), have completed an approved CAN course, and achieve reading and math qualifying scores on the test of adult basic education.

OSHA training institute scheduled at CLC

Central Lakes College will host a 10-hour general industry OSHA workshop from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Business and Industry Center in Brainerd.

CRMC to participate in learning collaboratives

CROSBY - Cuyuna Regional Medical Center, Crosby, is participating as a member of the Stratis Health 2009-2011 Hospital/Nursing Home Pressure Ulcer Prevention Project with several rural Minnesota hospitals and nursing homes.

The work is led by Stratis Health, Minnesota's Medicare Quality Improvement Organization, and is supported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Cuyuna Regional Medical Center will participate in quality improvement activities and interventions to improve the lives of the people who are admitted to and discharged from its hospital, with a specific focus on prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers. Hospitals and regional nursing homes will work together to improve communication between the facilities to ensure a safe transition from one setting to the next.

Cuyuna Regional Care Center was selected as a member of the Stratis Health Technical Assistance Group, with about 40 other Minnesota nursing homes.

Free Feeding Options Class at Lakewood

STAPLES - Expecting mothers and coaches are welcome to attend a free feeding options class from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Lakewood Health System's Main Campus sponsored by Lakewood Health System.

Topics discussed at the feeding options class include the basics about breastfeeding and bottle feeding, and helping parents make an informed decision on how to decide what's right for their family.

Cardiovascular Conference planned Oct. 6

The Brainerd Lakes Heart and Vascular Center is hosting a Brainerd Lakes Cardiovascular Conference titled "Nursing a 'Hot Heart;' Optimizing Care of the Interventional Cardiology Patient." The conference is planned Oct. 6 at The Lodge at Brainerd Lakes in Baxter.

The Brainerd Lakes Cardiovascular Conference is targeted to nurses, cardiac rehabilitation specialists, EMS and other health care professionals involved in the care of cardiac patients. The conference presenters include physicians in the hospitalist, emergency and cardiology departments, nurses, and nurse practitioners. These professionals will be presenting on topics that cover heart care treatment needs beginning with diagnosis and extending through angiography and interventional cardiology.

'Transformational leadership' is next Lunch and Learn

The next Lunch and Learn topic at Central Lakes College, Brainerd, is transformational leadership from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Business and Industry Center.

This session will explore the characteristics of transformational leadership. "Lunch and Learn" presentations are fast-paced and engaging on a variety of current business topics. The seminars are intended to provide an overview of information. The fee is $35 with the registration deadline Oct. 9.

Minnesota Thermal Science, Silent Power named award finalists

Minnesota Thermal Science, with offices in Plymouth and Baxter, and Silent Power Inc. of Nisswa were named finalists for the 2009 Tekne Awards.

Minnesota Thermal Science was named a finalist in the advanced manufacturing award category. Silent Power was named a finalist in the Cleantech Award category.

The Advanced Manufacturing Award is presented to companies that have excelled in the production of advanced materials and chemicals, machinery and equipment, electronics and components, measuring instruments, photonics, optics and lasers, computer and peripheral equipment.

The Cleantech Award recognizes businesses that manufacture environmentally sound products or solutions that reduce costs, inputs, energy consumption, waste or pollution.

The Minnesota High Tech Association, in partnership with LifeScience Alley and Enterprise Minnesota, announced finalists for the 10th annual Tekne Awards. The Tekne Awards honor companies and individuals who have shown superior technology innovation and leadership in Minnesota.

The 2009 Tekne Awards will be presented on Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Culver's earns Green Thumb Award

BAXTER - Bea and Mark Liedl, owners of Culver's in Baxter, were one of the select few franchise partners across the country chosen to receive the Green Thumb award from Culver Franchising System Inc. The Green Thumb Award recognizes Culver's franchise partners who understand that a guests' view of a dining experience has as much to do with cleanliness and atmosphere of the restaurant (both indoors and out) as it does with the quality of the food and friendliness of the service, the company reported.

Correction

An address change for Northern Pyschiatric Associates in Business Notes on Sept. 20 transposed the addresses between the company's former address and its new location.

Northern Psychiatric Associates moved a short distance from its current office on 7111 Forthun Road Suite 200 to a larger space on 7115 Forthun Road Suite 105 in Baxter. The new office opened Sept. 14.
