Four men face $20,000 in fines for wildfires
LITTLE FALLS (AP) - Four men face fines totaling $20,000 because they failed to put out their campfire and it caused a wildfire, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday.
Conservation Officer Brian Buria of Bigfork met the four men at the scene of the wildfire in Koochiching County in northern Minnesota on Sept. 14.
"All four stated they had started a campfire the previous evening and stated they tried to put it out," Buria said in a news release. "The men also admitted they did not put the fire out completely. The wind picked up rekindling the fire."
Charged with failure to extinguish a campfire were Christopher M. Sheasby, 18, and Bradley S. Begg, 18, both of International Falls; Andrew R. Promersberg, 19, of Little Fork; and Daniel S. Laymayer, 20, of Ranier.
The DNR said the four will also pay yet-to-be determined fire suppression costs.
"While this wildfire was an accident, it once again proves the importance of ensuring that your campfire is completely extinguished before leaving an area," Buria said.
