Nicaragua is next topic of CLC Cultural Thursday
Brainerd artist Haddie Hadachek has been to Nicaragua many times. Since 1994, this Potter for Peace has traveled to the Central American country about twice a year to improve the landscape.

When she speaks about Nicaragua at the Cultural Thursday program at noon Oct. 5 at Central Lakes College's Chalberg Theatre in Brainerd, Hadachek will "give a sense of the landscape É culturally, politically and geographically."

Admission is free.

An award-winning clay artist, Hadachek designs and makes decorative pieces and sculptural works. She is a member of the Potters for Peace, a U.S.-based nonprofit network of potters, educators, technicians, supporters and volunteers founded in 1986 in Nicaragua.

The organization offers support, solidarity and friendship to developing world potters. Using local skills and materials, Potters for Peace helps preserve cultural traditions. Hadachek has a successful career as an artist specializing in pottery. Her work can be found nationwide in exhibits, galleries and private and corporate collections.

She sells Nicaraguan pottery and drums at Black Bear Pottery and Studio near Garrison. Her next Nicaragua trip is planned for November. As with other stays, she could spend about three weeks working with fellow artisans in Nicaragua.

"I'm going back in January and probably will stay through March," she said. She now has a small farm in Nicaragua, so it's her home away from home.

"If you want to get a sense of the Nicaraguan culture, you've got to travel the roads as they do, see their smiles, their babies, their volcanoes and monkeys," she said. "You need to smell their tortillas and diesel, hear their roosters, poetry and music. You need to feel their pride, their frustrations and, of course, the heat."

Hadachek said she will talk about Potters for Peace and her adventures in Nicaragua since she was drawn there nearly 13 years ago. One of the key elements of the organization's mission is the sustainable water filter made available for the developing world. She will explain its importance.

"And I will talk about the adventurous travel possibilities for anyone," she said. The country is no longer war-torn. A conflict ended in 1989, and Nicaragua is being discovered as an inexpensive tourist destination.
