Nonprofit golf group to run LF municipal course
Council accepts task force recommendation
Golf course members who form a nonprofit organization will operate and manage the Little Falls municipal golf course beginning in 2008.

The Little Falls City Council accepted this recommendation Monday from its Golf Course Task Force.

Task force and golf course members earlier discussed this issue at a Sept. 19 meeting after the city council tabled discussion at its Sept. 11 meeting.

Little Falls City Administrator Richard Carlson said many good points were discussed at the Sept. 19 meeting. He said golf course members thought the city council was moving too fast. The council, as a result, pushed the agreement from April 1 to Jan. 1, 2008.

The city council has been looking at what to do with the city-owned golf course because it has lost nearly $120,000 over the past four years. Membership also has been declining. There were 334 members this year, compared to 600 in 2000.

The council formed a Golf Course Task Force to study options available for the management and operation of the golf course. The recommendation from the task force was to establish a nonprofit organization whereby residents, who were paid members of the golf course, would run the golf course.

Other recommendations from the task force were that the organization sign a lease for all of the golf course facilities at a nominal fee; operate a bar with a full liquor license in the clubhouse; close the kitchen, have the restaurant open with a limited menu only or lease the restaurant to a third party; hire a PGA golf professional and a golf course superintendent; and give all members, or stockholders who are under the nonprofit organization, a vote to determine the board of directors after the organization's incorporation.

Carlson said no one commented at the meeting about the recommendations.
