Brainerd swamps Willmar
GIRLS' SWIMMING AND DIVING
Brainerd swimmer Christie Nelson wasn't supposed to beat Willmar's Alissa Tinklenberg in the 200-yard freestyle.

Tinklenberg was, after all, a state meet participant and a Central Lakes Conference record holder.

And, the Warriors swimming and diving team was supposed to dominate the Cardinals.

Both teams came into Thursday's conference meet tied for second place with 3-1 records.

But Nelson and the Warriors accomplished both feats. Nelson out-touched Tinklenberg by a finger nail, winning by 4/100ths of a second as she posted a time of Christie Nelson won the 200 and 500 freestyle for Brainerd.

2:06.04.

And, Brainerd won 11 of 12 events en route to a 125-61 win to remain in the CLC title hunt.

"It should've been a 10-point meet," Warriors coach Dan Anderson said. "I told them a couple of days ago that we have three tough dual meets in a row and if we win all three we're 7-1 and if we lose all three we're 4-4. They didn't like the sound of 4-4.

"We needed a meet like this. We haven't swam that well all year but tonight we did."

Nelson, who breezed to a win in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:45.45, knew what she was up against in Tinklenberg but was undeterred.

"I knew (Tinklenberg) was really fast so I thought second place, not a big deal," Nelson said. "I just tried my hardest. Beating her is a really big deal because she's such a good swimmer. I never thought I wouldn't win. I go out always trying to win."

The biggest point in the meet came in the 100 freestyle when the Warriors swept the top three spots, burying Willmar. Destiny Schindele took first with a time of 57.84, while Robyn Wernberg was second (59.40), and Sara Dens was third (59.75.

"Going one, two, three in the 100 free was big for us," Anderson said. "I thought that was where the meet was going to be won because all six girls in that race were close to each other. All three of those girls turned in season-best times."

Brainerd's Jessica Reese picked up two wins as she glided to victories in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Reese had a time of 2:26.55 in the IM and recorded a time of 1:10.95 in the breaststroke.

"Jessica had a lifetime-best in the IM, which isn't really her race," said Anderson. "That was another surprise because that was a race I thought we were going to get third. But Jessica swam really well."

The Warriors, who improve their CLC record to 4-1, face their toughest stretch next week as they host always tough Alexandria and travel to CLC co-leader St. Cloud Tech.
