Holloway repeats as Legion golf champ
AREA SPORTS
Ron Holloway, with a score of 204 points, was the Brainerd American Legion two-man scramble golf league champion for the second consecutive year at Eagles Landing Golf Course.

Stan Stydnicki finished second for the third year in a row with 199 points, Jim Elg placed third at 196, Jerry Blanck was fourth with 191 and Virgil Crawford placed fifth with 187.

Two holes-in-one were recorded for the first time in league play. Stydnicki aced No. 11 at 125 yards with a 9-iron. Lyle Austin, aced No. 17 at 110 yards with a 7-wood.

Thirty-two golfers and substitutes participated in this year's 20-week event.

A season-ending banquet is scheduled Tuesday at the Fort Steakhouse in Fort Ripley. Social hour is at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. with an awards banquet to follow.

Pierz to induct five

Five former Pierz High School athletes will be inducted into the Pioneers Hall of Fame at halftime of the football game Friday night against Maple Lake.

Inductees include Roberta (Girtz) Kelash (class of 1984), Gary J. Kummet (1994), Kay (Happke) Bekken (1987), Doug Gruber (1971) and Shane Poepping (1992).

A reception will be held in the school commons following the game. The public is invited.

JV Blue wins

The Brainerd Warrior junior varsity boys' Blue team blanked Fergus Falls 4-0 Thursday.

Brainerd keeper John Schuldheisz stopped 13 shots.

Mike Ruen scored in the 26th minute, assisted by Jordan Posch.

Posch scored in the 51st minute, assisted by Jacob Williams.

Dan Nichols scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute.

Williams scored in the 81st minute, assisted by Ruen.

Willmar downs

Brainerd JV

Brainerd's Melissa Wentworth won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and Laura Goll captured first place in the 200 freestyle as the Warriors fell to the Willmar Cardinals 95-91 in junior varsity girls' swimming and diving Thursday.
