Warriors shine on cloudy day
Cardinals' Naomi Landecker continues torrid pace
MINNEAPOLIS - The Brainerd Warriors cross country teams lived up to the rankings during Saturday's Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota.

Both teams were the second Minnesota team to place. The boys' team captured fifth and the girls' team secured seventh place in a meet that featured teams from Iowa, South Dakota, Colorado, Virginia and Idaho.

"The boys' team was 42 points out of winning and Tyler Rose, who was under the weather and is normally our No. 1 guy was or fourth runner," said Warriors head coach Dave Herath. "For him to gut it out that was a nice job, but we were right in the thick of things."

Naomi Landecker placed fourth

Brainerd defeated top-ranked Rosemount, but lost to the second-ranked team in Wyzata, which won the event with 211 points. Brainerd, led by Thomas Ruttger's ninth-place time of 16:47, finished with 253 points.

Luke Delaney was 28th followed by Jimmy Dean in 62nd. Rose was 68th and Mitch Lorenze was 86th for the Warriors, who entered the race ranked fourth.

"It was just a great effort for Thomas to be ninth," said Herath. "With 400 plus runners that's super. He had just a great start. The rest of the guys got pinned in at the start. Thomas shot out there and really stayed in the top 15 until the final 200 meters. He then passed four guys to finish ninth."

The top-ranked Warrior girls' team placed seventh with 347 points. Burnsville, which

placed fourth, was the top Minnesota team with 182 points.

Hannah McAllister paced the girls' team with a 24th-place time of 20:00. Jenna Dean was one second behind in 25th. Courtney Wing was 50th, Megan Holmes 58th and Katherine Mueller was 190th in the race that was one kilometer longer than usual.

"Hannah and Jenna are true distance type runners so they had the same splits at the one mile and the two mile," Herath said. "Katherine, who runs the 400- and 800-meters in track had to stretch herself for the full 5K. She still ran a nice race, but she's not that type of a runner. Either is Kacie Bahr."

Hannah McAllister placed 24th

Naomi Landecker's fourth-place time of 19:07 helped the Staples-Motley Cardinals girls' team to 14th place. The Cardinals were second only to Perham (11th place) for Class 1A schools.

The Cardinals boys' team placed 41st.

Hannah Toedter's 48th-place time of 22:05 helped the Wadena-Deer Creek girls' team to a 22nd-place finish in the Maroon Division.

The W-DC boys' team placed 41st in the Maroon Division and were led by Cory Asfeld's 52nd-place finish.
