September rainfall above average, but figure for year lags
September's rainfall of 3.84 inches was above the 10-year-average of 3.4 inches, the DNR Area Forestry office in Brainerd reported, but the area still lags slightly behind the year-to-date precipitation figures.

So far, the area has received 19.29 inches of precipitation this year, compared to an average of 21.61 inches.

The high temperature in September was 87 degrees on Sept. 1. The low temperature was 32 degrees on Sept. 9.

YMCA to offer Group Power classes

The Brainerd Family YMCA will host free Group Power classes Tuesday and Wednesday at various times to introduce the Fall 2008 release of new songs and choreography. New music will include artists such as Heart, Fergie, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Rascal Flatts, Pink, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Daughtry.

This 60-minute barbell program strengthens all major muscles.

To reserve your spot in one of the free classes, call the YMCA at 829-4767. You do not have to be a member to attend one of these free classes. Class size is limited to 28 participants per class; appropriate fitness attire and gym shoes required.

Excelsior bridge ceremony Oct. 15

Baxter Mayor Darrel Olson is inviting local residents to join city staffers, DNR and Minnesota Department of Transportation officials, bridge construction workers and elected officials to celebrate the opening and first crossing of the Excelsior Road bridge of the Paul Bunyan State Trail at 1 p.m. Oct. 15 in Baxter.

Visitors are asked to park in the parking lot at Northland Arboretum. A photograph of the group will be taken and given to participants. A limited edition commemorative button also will be provided to attendees.

After the bridge walk and photograph session participants will return to the arboretum for an informal program and refreshments.

Congressman Jim Oberstar will be the keynote speaker.

CLC forum to explore work force development

Work force development is the topic of the October Rosenmeier forum scheduled for noon Oct. 9 in Lecture Hall E354 on the Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College. Guest presenters for the forum are three 1974 Brainerd High School graduates, Mary Gottsch, Kevin Thesing and Brian Herder.

Gottsch is the director of Bridges Workplace Collection at the Brainerd Lakes Chamber. Thesing is the owner of Lakes Printing. Herder is co-owner of Russell Herder Advertising.
