Think Pink: Sharing your stories on breast cancer
City Editor Not all family traditions endure over time. And some rightfully should be broken - I never liked raisins in Thanksgiving dressing anyway.
I hope to crush a chain in my family - both my mother, Joan Nagorski, and grandmother, the late Lucile Holt, fought breast cancer.
So far, so good.
Mom continues to be a survivor. Fighting back is one family tradition I intend to carry on. Cancer is nothing to be taken lightly.
As part of this proactive fight, I've tolerated yearly mammograms for nearly a decade - it's not so bad! And good news always is good news! It's best to take control of your health and be proactive. And maybe in my lifetime a cure will be found for this wicked disease.
My grandma died in 1979 - she enjoyed 16 years after she was diagnosed and underwent a mastectomy. Mom's a trouper - she was diagnosed 10 years ago. Another diagnosis - brain cancer in 2005 - hasn't slowed her down. She's still battling.
My family is not alone. Most people today have been touched in one way or another by at least one friend, co-worker or family member who is combating breast cancer.
The one unifying thing about cancer, including breast cancer, is its ability to bring out the strong resolve in survivors and their families. Families grow closer and more united.
The Brainerd lakes area has many shining examples of strong women - Kathy Buxton, Bonnie Cumberland, Pat Hassett, Emily Lanin and the list goes on - who have tackled breast cancer head-on.
We want to hear from you. If you have a story to share about your mom, your sister or a friend - or your own personal journey, write to me: Kathi Nagorski, Brainerd Dispatch, P.O. Box 974, Brainerd, MN 56401 or e-mail kathi.nagorski@brainerddispatch.com.
A sampling of your stories will be printed on pink paper in the Brainerd Dispatch's Think Pink edition on Oct. 17. Deadline to submit your stories is Oct. 14.
Love you, Mom!
