Ministry keeps food on the table
Everyone likes a good deal.

So how about getting $60 worth of groceries for half price?

Angel Food menu

The following menu is the Angel Food Ministries October Signature Box of food and should feed a family of four for a week. Cost is $30.

1.5 pounds New York strip steaks.

1 pound steak fajita strips.

2 pounds chicken stir fry skillet meal.

1 pound lean ground beef.

1.5 pounds breaded white meat chicken tenders.

1 pound center cut ham steaks.

1 pound bake or fry fish sticks.

1 pound pasta.

25 ounces marinara sauce.

1 pound frozen baby lima beans.

1 pound frozen mixed vegetables.

2 pound bag of fresh apples.

10 flour tortilla wraps.

32 ounces 2 percent shelf-stable milk.

1 dozen eggs.

Dessert.

Angel Food Ministries offers boxes of food for roughly half the price it would sell for at a grocery store. It's their way of providing food and financial relief to people around the country, no strings attached.

There are no income requirements, no paperwork and no approval process. It's just discounted food for anyone who wants it.

"It's been a tremendous help for young families and the elderly," said Tom Ebinger, a local Angel Food Ministries volunteer.

The program started nationally in 1994, and began last fall in Brainerd. Berniece Hedquist of First Lutheran Church heard about Angel Food Ministries while attending a church in Brooklyn Park.

"It sounded like something we needed in the lakes area," she said.

Since it started, as many as 260 boxes of food have been purchased monthly by lakes area residents.

Here's how it works: Angel Food Ministries provides a monthly menu with boxes of frozen, fresh and dried food - the Signature Box has a variety of food, enough to feed a family of four for a week; the Senior and Convenience Meals Box is ideal for senior citizens or people on the go; there's also allergen-free, assorted meat, assorted steak, breaded chicken and fresh fruit and vegetable boxes. Prices range from $30 for the Signature Box to $20 for the Breaded Chicken Combo Box. Orders are taken at First Lutheran Church, by calling the church at 829-9552, or at angelfoodministries.org.

The deadline for October orders is Oct. 14 and food will be distributed from 2-4 p.m. on Oct. 24 at First Lutheran.

Hedquist said orders are coming from people who live as far away as Hackensack, Little Falls and Staples and most customers are either young families or senior citizens.

"It's helpful to senior citizens who are on a budget," Hedquist said. "There's no strings attached to any of it."

"It's just good food at reasonable prices," added Roxanne Swanberg, another Angel Food volunteer from First Lutheran.

Some people are ordering a box of food for themselves and donating one to a needy family or places like the Salvation Army.

The food is "restaurant grade," and comes from well-known companies. Hedquist said there's no dented cans or expired products. The food is shipped from Georgia to Minneapolis where a group from First Lutheran picks it up and delivers it to Brainerd for customers to pick up their orders.

"You can't help but feel good when you see these people and how much this means to them," Hedquist said.
