New sex offender policy being developed in Staples-Motley Schools
STAPLES - Mark Schmitz, superintendent for the Staples-Motley School District, Friday released a statement concerning the Level 3 Sex Offender community notification meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Centennial Auditorium in Staples.
Schmitz said school administration is working closely with the police departments in Motley and Staples to understand the district's rights and responsibilities for handling situations involving sex offenders on school property and/or at school-related activities.
"Student safety is a top priority," said Schmitz. "Following the meeting on Oct. 7, 2008, I will be working directly with Kyle Huber, Staples police chief, to identify the schools' course of action and all staff will be notified of our policy."
Tuesday's meeting will concern the Oct. 16 release of Douglas James Denning, 43, a Level 3 sex offender, from the Rush City state prison who is scheduled to move back to Staples. The meeting is being conducted by the Staples Police Department and the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
The Staples-Motley School Board will be completing the first reading of an official school policy regarding registered sex offenders during the board's meeting Oct. 20 in Motley.
