14 apply for board
opening BRAINERD SCHOOL BOARD Staff Writer Fourteen people have applied to fill a one-year appointment to the Brainerd School Board, including a former board member and a current Brainerd City Council member.
The school district Friday afternoon released the names who have applied to fill a special one-year appointment to the board, because of Ruth Gmeinder's resignation last month.
The applicants are:
¥ Patricia Aanes, a Brainerd attorney. Aanes received her bachelor's degree in history from the University of Minnesota and law degree from Hamline University School of Law. She has been a partner/associate for Erickson, Pearson and Aanes Law Offices since 1998.
¥ Christian Barnett, a Baxter financial adviser and former school teacher. He received his bachelor's degree from Ohio State University and has his Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Series 7/66 licensure. He has been a financial adviser since 2007 but also worked as a high school teacher from 1999-2007, middle school teacher from 1996-1999, head track coach from 2000-2006 and a varsity football coach from 1993-1999.
¥ Kevin Goedker, a Brainerd real estate agent and current Brainerd City Council member who is running for re-election. Goedker received a communications and electronics degree from the U.S. Marine Corps and attended Central Lakes College and Okaloosa-Walton Community College. He's been a real estate agent since 1987. His government service includes the U.S. Marine Corps and serving on the Brainerd City Council. He is currently seeking his second term as a Ward 3 council member.
¥ Tom Haglin, a businessman from Nisswa. Haglin received his associate's degree from CLC and a bachelor's degree in business management from the College of St. Scholastica. He has been the owner/chief executive officer for Lindar Corp. since 1993.
¥ Anne Holub of Baxter. Holub attended Hamline University and the University of Wisconsin, River Falls and Superior. She is a former school social worker for St. Paul Public Schools from 1977-1985 and 1987-1989 and for Duluth Public Schools from 1986-87. She was chair of Save Our Schools.
¥ Michael Jay, a Brainerd day-care provider. His previous government service experience includes the board of directors for the Minnesota Jaycees and the Brainerd Planning and Zoning board.
¥ Molly Kurtzman of Nisswa. Kurtzman received her bachelor's degree in communications and politics from Randolph-Macon Women's College. She previously worked for Northwest Airlines as an administrative assistant and a senior analyst in financial planning and analysis from 1994-1999.
¥ Jill Marohn, a Baxter day-care provider and former teacher. Marohn received her associate's degree from CLC, an elementary education degree from St. Cloud State University and her master in leadership degree from Southwest State University. She owns a day care and worked as a teacher from 1999-2006.
¥ Charles McQuinn, a Nisswa real estate developer. McQuinn received a bachelor's degree in business management from the University of St. Thomas. He's currently employed by Terra Vista Developers, A&C Holdings, CMA Management and Lake Region Storage. His volunteer work includes Ski Gull and the Gull Lake Yacht Club. His previous governmental service includes being a board member of Gull Chain of Lakes Association.
¥ Janet Moran, a Nisswa community organizer, volunteer, teacher and former school board member. Moran received her bachelor's and master's degrees in history, family and social sciences from the University of Wisconsin. She previously served from 1987-2003 on the Brainerd School Board and was the Brainerd Public Library director from 1979-1983. Moran was named an Outstanding School Board member from the Minnesota School Boards Association and received the Silent Warrior award.
¥ Craig Nathan, a Brainerd operations manager for the Rural Minnesota CEP office. Nathan received his business administration degree from Bemidji State University and his master's degree in management from the College of St. Scholastica.
¥ Mark Olson, a Brainerd resident who works for the city of Brainerd. Olson attended Mankato State College and has worked since 2001 in the Brainerd Street Department. Olson unsuccessfully ran for school board last year.
¥ Carol Pundt, a Baxter insurance agent and former Crosby-Ironton School Board member. Pundt has the FLMI, LUTCF and ACS certification and is a Blandin Leadership graduate. She has been an insurance agent/account executive for Brainerd Insurance Agency for 15 years. She served on the C-I School Board from 1998-2006, was deputy clerk of Bay Lake Township and has served as a head Crow Wing County election judge since 1998.
¥ John Raboin, a Baxter attorney. Raboin's education includes a bachelor's degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy and a law degree from Arizona State University College of Law. He has been employed as a civil trial attorney at the Raboin Law Firm Ltd. since 1989. His previous governmental service includes an internship with U.S. Sen. John McCain.
A special school board meeting will be 11:30 a.m. Monday to discuss the applications. The board plans to meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday to interview applicants individually. The board may make a decision on who will be appointed to the board after the last interview at the Thursday meeting. All meetings, including interviews, are open to the public.
These meetings will take place in the second floor board room at Washington Educational Services Building, 804 Oak St., Brainerd.
