High-powered Pirates prevail

VERNDALE - Matt Moenkedick carried the ball 34 times and turned those chances into 259 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Verndale Pirates past the Eagle Valley Rebels for a 46-22 Pheasant Conference victory

Moenkedick broke a scoreless tie with a 35-yard run in the first quarter. Nine minutes later, he had an opportunity to score again, but fumbled a yard shy of the end zone. The ball bounced into the end zone where Dan Weiher recovered it for a touchdown.

Amos Schmidt scored from 62-yards out to give the third-ranked Pirates a 24-6 second quarter lead. Schmidt rushed for 129 yards on 15 carries.

Zack Meidinger returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown and Moenkedick scored the final two touchdowns with runs from 3 and 27 yards.
