Everything clicks for Warriors
HOMECOMING 2009 | WARRIORS 53, APOLLO 0
Special teams.

Offense.

Defense.

You name it and it was clicking as the Brainerd Warriors dismantled the St. Cloud Apollo Eagles 53-0 in their homecoming game Saturday afternoon at Adamson Field.

The Warriors rolled up 346 total yards and scored all of their points in the first three quarters. Midway through the third quarter Brainerd reserves were already in the ballgame.

Brainerd quarterback Reid Mimmack was tackled by St. Cloud Apollo's Horace Wimberly (21) on a keeper Saturday. Mimmack was 9 of 10 for 171 yards and three touchdowns in the homecoming game. Brainerd Dispatch/Steve Kohls

"Everything was clicking is all you can really say," Warriors quarterback Reid Mimmack said. "Everyone came together, everyone did their job, everything worked out."

Brainerd's defense smothered Apollo's single-wing offense, confining the Eagles to 103 yards, 44 through three quarters, and five first downs, one in the second half. The Warriors had two sacks and caused two turnovers.

"Our defensive line was doing really well today," Warriors defensive back Nate Gervenak said. "(Apollo) didn't pass very much but our linebackers were hitting hard. We just knocked them down and kept knocking them down."

Warriors special teams knocked down 192 yards in returns and scored twice.

"This was by far our best game," Warriors coach Ron Stolski said. "Our kids played hard. It was a definitely a step up, lots of good improvement. I was very proud of the effort.

"Defensively, we led the way. Offensively, I was pleased with the way we played. It was just a good all-around effort.

"I think every kid got in, other than our sophomores. We have a lot of juniors that have earned playing time. We tried to get them all some plays, some got a lot more than others."

Mercifully, the last quarter was played with running time in effect. Running time kicks in when one team leads by 35 points in the fourth quarter.

Mimmack and his favorite receiver, Kyle Crocker, led the way.

Mimmack completed his first eight passes (he was intercepted on the ninth) and finished 9 of 10 for 171 yards and three scores.

Crocker caught a 50-yard touchdown pass and totaled five catches for 109 yards. He also ran four yards for a TD.

Tight ends Aaron Pavek and Cole Stegora had the other touchdown receptions. Carsten Nelson and Jaron Hanson ran for the other Warrior offensive scores.

Jordan Hayes returned the second-half kickoff 90 yards for a TD. Jack Luke took a punt 46 yards to the end zone for Brainerd's final score.

"Jack Luke is electric, I saw that in the (junior varsity) game," Stolski said. "And, it was good to see Hayes get it done. Our special teams have been pretty good."
