7 board finalists to be interviewed BRAINERD SCHOOL BOARD Staff Writer The Brainerd School Board plans to quiz seven finalists during interviews Wednesday and Thursday nights to fill the one-year appointment to the board.
School board members narrowed its field of 15 candidates to seven finalists during a special board meeting Monday.
Those finalists are: Tom Haglin, Anne Holub, Molly Kurtzman, Janet Moran, Craig Nathan, Mark Olson and John Raboin. They will be individually scheduled for 15-minute interviews in half-hour intervals with board members at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and 7 p.m. Thursday in the board room at Washington Educational Services Building in Brainerd. These interviews are open to the public. Board members may choose to make a decision on the board appointment following the last interview on Thursday night. If a decision is made, the newest board member will be installed at Monday's regular school board meeting.
The other applicants were: Patricia Aanes, Christian Barnett, Nancy Cross, Kevin Goedker, Michael Jay, Jill Marohn, Charles McQuinn and Carol Pundt.
Board members did not discuss the candidates and their qualifications but instead decided to vote for their top six by paper ballot to find out if they were able to reach an agreement on finalists.
Each candidate was identified by number only and two candidates received five votes, three candidates received four votes, two candidates received three votes and one candidate received one vote.
As a result, the board came to a consensus to interview seven finalists - all those who received multiple votes.
Then board chair Reed Campbell read the names of the finalists. Several board members commented on the quality list of applicants and encouraged all applicants to consider a run for a board seat next fall.
"I thought the whole group was excellent," said board member Bob Nystrom. "Any one of them would make a great school board member."
Nystrom said he personally looked for candidates who have been involved in a district advisory committee and he considered gender equity an important factor since this board appointment would be replacing former board member Ruth Gmeinder, who was one of two women on the board.
Board member Ruth Nelson said she also looked for candidates who have been involved in the district in some capacity, have a financial background and she said it was a plus for her for candidates to have children in the district because it meant they have a personal investment in Brainerd schools.
"It was amazing how many excellent candidates there were," said Nelson. "They all have amazing strengths."
"It shows we have a lot of good people who are willing to step up and help from the community," added Campbell.
