Achermann benefit planned
LEADER - The family of Peter Achermann, the 82-year-old rural Leader man missing since July 24, will host "For Pete's Sake," a benefit to help defray the costs of the search for Achermann.

The benefit will start with a spaghetti buffet at noon on Oct. 24 at the Bear's Den in Leader, followed by a live auction from 1-4 p.m. There also will be a silent auction, raffles and games throughout the afternoon.

Donations of new or gently used items are needed.

League to sponsor forum

Ten Brainerd School Board candidates will be invited to take part in a League of Women Voters forum at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Brainerd High School Little Theatre.

Candidates seeking one of the three four-year seats on the board include Howard Brewer, Nancy Cross, Todd Froemming, Tom Haglin, incumbent Ruth Nelson and Chris Robinson.

Those seeking the two-year special board term include Jim Hunt, Theresa Knierim, incumbent Bob Nystrom and Tom Peterson.

There will be two separate panels answering questions. The first panel of four includes candidates who are running for the one two-year term. At 7:15 p.m. the second panel will begin its presentation. This consists of six candidates who are running for the full four-year term.

All candidates will give a three-minute speech about their reasons for wanting to be on the board and their qualifications. This will be followed by questions asked from the audience by a group of four media and school representatives.

This forum will be televised on the local cable station live on Oct. 19. The broadcast will be repeated several times at various intervals until the Nov. 3 election.

Sheriff's tactical team wins

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Tactical Response Team earned first place at the fourth annual Central Minnesota SWAT Competition last month in Ottertail County.

Crow Wing County, as overall champion, defeated defending champion Red River Valley SWAT by 105 points. Six SWAT teams competed in seven events over the two-day competition. Crow Wing County placed within the top three positions on all events and placed first in more than half. The events included shoot and move, team scramble, bunker event, fitness challenge, sniper event, hostage rescue and tactical medic challenge.

This is the second time in three years that the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Tactical Response Team has won the competition.

Members of the Tactical Response Team include deputies from the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department and officers from the Brainerd, Baxter, Breezy Point, Crosby and Nisswa police departments.

Area 5 Bowling Tournament

The Area 5 Bowling Tournaments will start at 9 a.m. Thursday and Oct. 22 at Jack's House in Brainerd.

Jack's will offer bowlers the chance to compete in traditional singles, ramp and unassisted ramp events. The Special Olympics Minnesota Unified Sports program also offers athletes the chance to compete in their doubles and team events.

Area teams expected to attend the competition include public schools in Aitkin, Brainerd, Crosby, Little Falls, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Pequot Lakes, Pillager, Staples, Verndale, Wadena and independents Hanson and Leek, Little Falls Adults, New York Mills Special Olympics and the Mille Lacs Raiders.

Habitat for Humanity to host Friday Morning Coffee

LITTLE FALLS - Habitat for Humanity is sponsoring the Little Falls Area Chamber of Commerce's networking event Friday Morning Coffee.

The event is 7:30-9 a.m. Friday at the chamber 200 First St. N.W. Little Falls. Announcements and introductions will be at 8:15 a.m.
