Dr. Galen Adkins
Dr. Galen H. Adkins, D.V.M, age 68, died on Oct. 4, 2009, at North Memorial Medical Center. He was born Dec. 31, 1940, in Pine River, Minn., to Dr. Galen Sr. and Margaret (Gorrell) Adkins. He graduated high school from St. Alphonsus in Detroit in 1959 and attended St. John's University. He married his lifelong sweetheart Kathryn Adkins (McKeever) in 1964 and graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 1967.

Upon graduation Galen and Kathy moved to Miami where he practiced for one year. They then returned to Minnesota where they ran a mixed animal practice for five years. He went on to work for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health (MNBAH), as a state veterinarian for 31 years. Galen and Kathy opened "Ye Ole Country Doc" veterinary clinic where they served the community until his passing. They continued and enjoyed treating animals in the small animal clinic in their home. Galen was commonly known as Ye Ole Country Doc. He was also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA), Minnesota Deer Breeders Association and the Minnesota Draft Horse Association.

Galen was a passionate husband and father who enjoyed hunting, fishing and most of all his prized Percheron team, "Swen and Ole."

He is survived by his loving wife, Kathryn, of 45 years; five sons, Kevin, Kirk (Deb), Keith (Rhonda), Kent (Heidi), Kyle (Lori); and three daughters, Kimberly (Ted) Ebnet, Kari McAllister (Brett), Kelly (Cory) Hertling; sisters, Peggy (Jim) Merillat, Allison (Terry) Adkins-Peterson, Naida Reynolds, Robin Adkins; and 23 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Galen Sr. and Margaret Adkins; sister, Gaylene McKenzie; son, Kraig Anthony; and granddaughter, Carilee Ann. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed. His legacy will live on.

Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Pine River. Burial will follow at Norwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m, with a parish scripture service at 7 p.m. at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Kline Funeral Home of Pine River is in charge of the arrangements.
