Open Forum: Results of a BRHSC drive-by
After reading the article on BRHSC in the Sept. 15 Dispatch Vox Pop, I decided out of curiosity to take a "look-see" drive through of the campus there.
I admit you don't see much by just driving around, but what I did see was rather encouraging. The buildings appeared to be in reasonably good shape, considering how long some have been empty. Building No. 6 looked like it needed some tender, loving care.
There were a few sore spots that I observed, a tire up against a fence, a deteriorating concrete block wall probably used to hide a garbage container, and some areas that simply needed mowing. All in all, the grounds looked very good ... almost a park-like atmosphere. That being said, it brings me to the reason for writing this article for Open Forum.
It would seem to me, the Halsted and Peterson Buildings could be turned into a veterans complex, such as a veterans home; a dentistry clinic; a Hearing Loss Clinic; or a Mental Health and Rehabilitation Center. The new veterans wellness outpatient clinic could remain where it is on Northwest Seventh Street as long as it is up and running already.( However to note; it is a very confusing place to visit the first time you have to go there!)
It seems none of this will probably happen, according to the Dispatch article in local news briefs (Sept. 30) because the current first choice for a veterans home is Little Falls. As a World War II Veteran, I would prefer they reconsider BRHSC as our Minnesota state veterans facility.
Whatever the outcome, my hat goes off to Don Samuelson and the others who have tried to make it happen.

Obama: Speech-maker-in-chief
Once again our president has moved to lower the status of the office of POTUS in the world for his own sake. Just as he did when he called out various private citizens by name in his press conference, inserted himself into dirty local politics, and appeared on various morning and night entertainment shows in an attempt to imbue an ever increasing skeptical public. The bumbling Barack Obama undeniably over-reached in his attempt to, "bring home," the Olympics to the teen-aged murder rate capitol of western society. Once again it is HIS petty politicking that serves only to lower the standing of our country. At least for Obama this may work toward his great promise to the world. We should all be concerned that Obama seems to only have one thing in mind when it comes to his world view - so called "equality"amongst all people and nations. It sounds nice until you consider the fact that he is bent on sawing off the legs of the successful in order to make things "even."

Check out the scientific facts
Dateline October, 1991: "The Typing Institute, a typewriter industry lobbying group, today issued a study criticizing a Bush administration program to expand personal computer access in schools. Typing Institute chairman James Qwerty (also CEO of National Typewriters, Inc.) testified before Congress that "Kids won't need computers to be successful in the future. Typewriters and white out have powered our offices for 100 years - why change now?"
Silly? Yes, but a similar campaign is under way now to prevent us from moving to clean renewable energy. Companies, politicians and foreign countries dependent upon oil and coal profits are working overtime to prevent America from moving forward toward an energy-independent future. Tainted information on global warming and energy independence is everywhere in the back hallways of Congress and on the web, and the purveyors of this "information" purposely make it difficult to detect who is financing their disinformation efforts.
Want straight info from real scientists? Check out the Union of Concerned Scientists website at www.ucsusa.org. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is a 40-year-old organization that makes recommendations based upon scientific knowledge and rational analysis - not on politics and profits. The UCS study entitled "Climate 2030: A National Blueprint for a Clean Energy Economy" lays out a careful and logical roadmap for making America energy independent and dramatically lowering CO2 emissions while jump-starting new industries - and ultimately saving consumers money.
