CLC receives $120,000 from Purple Heart foundation
Current and future student veterans and their spouses who attend Central Lakes College will benefit from the $120,000 received Monday from the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation.
Bill Wroolie, a Brainerd resident and treasurer of the national organization, presented two checks to the CLC Foundation on Monday. One check was for $100,000, the other was for $20,000.
On hand to offer their thanks were CLC President Larry Lundblad, CLC Foundation President Richard Breen, CLC Foundation Executive Director Diane Scearcy, and Don Pfeffer, coordinator of the Veterans Resource Center at CLC and state director of the new statewide initiative to serve veterans at Minnesota's public colleges and universities.
"We're extremely grateful," Scearcy said. "It wouldn't have been possible without the determination and effort on the part of one of our alumni, Bill Wroolie."
Scearcy said Wroolie had been advocating for the CLC award from the Purple Heart Foundation for about a year.
Wroolie said that CLC is the first college in the state to receive such a donation, which has been made just five times previously since its inception. CLC is the first community and technical college in the nation to receive the award.
"Our organization raises funds to serve veterans," Wroolie said. "What better way to serve them, and especially the people returning from the Gulf War, than with scholarships to enhance their education. That's what it's all about, to improve their lives."
The larger check, $100,000, will be invested so that earnings can provide future scholarships.
The flow-through $20,000 donation will be applied to more immediate financial aid. It will be used for scholarships starting with the current semester and over the next several years is earmarked for use by qualifying students. Included in criteria for eligibility:
¥ Honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. armed forces.
¥ Recipients of the Purple Heart medal.
¥ Spouse of a Purple Heart medal veteran.
¥ Enrolled at CLC for at least six credits per semester.
At some date determined by the Purple Heart Foundation, the scholarship program may be opened to children and grandchildren of Purple Heart veterans.
