One last splash
Schindele wins four events in her final home meet as a Warrior
Destiney Schindele knew she was destined to swim one final meet in the Brainerd High School pool.

The senior made the occasion memorable Thursday night by winning two individual events and swimming on two first-place relays in a 117-67 Central Lakes Conference victory over the Alexandria Cardinals.

"It was actually a little emotional," she said. "Ever since my freshmen year, from day one, I've been waiting for it. Then, when it actually came, it was like, 'Wow, I can't believe it.

"I didn't want it to happen. I wish it wasn't my last meet, but for being my last meet it went very well and I'm happy."

Schindele was one of 12 seniors in their final home meet.

"We have so much of the season left," Warriors coach Dan Anderson said. "It seems strange to be done here, but we are. We still have a lot of unfinished business to take care of. It's been a nice group of seniors."

Schindele's top competition in the 50-yard freestyle was Alexandria's Rosey Erickson, who swam a 25.57 to Schindele's 25.52.

"I thought the start was pretty good," Schindele said. "Then, on the way back, I saw that we were still neck and neck, and I pushed straight for it. I kind of kept my head down, and stopped breathing until I couldn't breathe anymore. It came down to that last stroke and I ended up beating her by 5/100ths of a second. It was sure luck though."

In the 100 free, Schindele had an easier time, beating Sam Thompson's 57.44 with a 55.39.

"I feel more like a veteran in that race," Schindele said. "I feel I get more mentally prepared for the 100 because it's my race.

"It was the same thing as the 50. I just put my head down and swam my fastest. I was hoping to go a little bit faster. I felt I could go a little faster, but I didn't want to overdo it right now."

Destiney Schindele won two individual races.

Schindele swam the butterfly leg on the 200 medley relay, which included Siri Smith, Della Gramer and Alex Erickson.

"I was swimming against Rosey again and it was neck and neck," Schindele said. "If it hadn't been for the two swimming before me and getting us a little bit ahead it would have been a really close race between me and her."

Siri Smith, Sarah Dens and Nikki Hansen preceded Schindele in the first-place 400 free relay.

"I felt being it was my last race in this pool I needed to go fast," Schindele said. "We've been having hard practices all week so when I heard my split was a 55 I wasn't too depressed."

Other Warrior wins were by Siri Smith in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, Sam Smith in diving, Laura Goll in the 500 free and the 200 free relay of Nikki Hansen, Dens, Alex Erickson and Aylah Pagel.
