Brainerd's Salo wins subsection

Three other Warriors also advance to sections

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Brainerd freshman Mikinzee Salo defeated top-seeded Brittany Thompson of Bemidji 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to claim the North Subsection 8-2A singles title Thursday at the Grand Forks Tennis Centre.

Brainerd's Taylor Headlee finished third as did the Warriors' No. 1 doubles team of Zoe Houle-Emily Nelson.

The top four singles players and the top four doubles teams advance to the Section 8-2A individual tournament at the Grand Forks Tennis Centre.

Salo, the sixth-ranked player in the 14-player singles tournament, topped Moorhead's Emma Connell, Alexandria's Annie Trebelhorn and Kelsey Bretschneider of Bemidji en route to winning the title.

Mikinzee Salo of Brainerd won the North Subsection 8-2A singles title.

Headlee defeated Bretschneider in straight sets in the third-place match.

Houle-Nelson topped Alexandria's Emily Wilkins-Eve Hartsell 6-1, 6-0 in the third-place match.

The doubles team didn't drop a set until it faced Megan Huseby-Cortne Solberg of Bemidji in the semifinal round.
