Business notes Titus joins county land services department
Kirk Titus joined Crow Wing County Oct. 1 as a supervisor in the Land Services Department, directing the efforts of the county's Natural Resource Management Division, formerly known as the Land Department.
Titus, Brainerd, will be performing county land commissioner duties under the supervision of Mark Liedl, Land Services director.
A natural resource manager with more than 25 years of forestry experience, Titus' most recent assignment was with Weyerhaeuser Co., where he established technology-based management systems in facilities throughout the country.
Titus received his forestry degree from Iowa State University in 1984. He is a past member of the Minnesota Timber Producers Board and served as Minnesota state chairman of the Minnesota Sustainable Forestry Initiative Implementation Committee.
Flying W Ranch ranked fifth in Angus registrations
PEQUOT LAKES - Flying W Ranch, Pequot Lakes, ranked as fifth largest in registering the most Angus beef cattle in Minnesota, having recorded 170 head of Angus with the American Angus Association during fiscal year 2009, which ended Sept. 30, according to Bryce Schumann, chief executive officer of the American Angus Association.
Angus breeders across the nation in 2009 registered 282,911 head of Angus cattle. The American Angus Association, headquartered in St. Joseph, Mo., is the largest beef registry association in the world in terms of both annual registrations and active members.
Holden gains recognition
The law firm of Sieben, Grose, Von Holtum & Carey announced attorney Susan M. Holden, partner in the firm who is from Brainerd, will be honored with the Fidelis Apparitor Award following the eighth annual Red Mass, 5 p.m. Nov. 14 at Sacred Heart Chapel, St. Benedict's monastery in St. Joseph.
The award, which means "faithful servant" in Latin, is given to individuals who have been good and faithful servants of the law. Though Holden has received her certification as trial specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association and has years of experience as a strong advocate representing injured people, she is receiving this year's award because of her tireless commitment to her community. Holden played a major role in collecting damages for victims of the 2007 I-35W bridge collapse and was one of only three consumer advocate attorneys appointed by the Minnesota Legislature to the "Special Masters Panel" that distributed compensation to the victims.
The reception in which Holden receives the award will take place at the Gorecki Dining and Conference Center at the College of Saint Benedict directly following the Red Mass.

Lindgron named financial adviser
Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union recently announced Barb Lindgron is now a financial adviser with the Affinity Plus Investment Center.
Insurance agencies gain recognition
Two area insurance agencies, The Insurance Office of Brainerd and RG Insurance of Baxter, received an award from Harleysville Insurance to recognize commitment to outstanding customer service and quality. Each has worked with Harleysville for more than 10 years.
Steve Isackson is the agency manager at The Insurance Office. Kevin Pelto, Robin Hopp and Craig Holm are agents at RG Insurance.
Brainerd Post Office earns customer service award
The Brainerd Post Office was recognized as one of the Postal Service's Northland District offices to receive an individual five-star customer service award.
The Postal Service's Northland District, which serves most of Minnesota and the western third of Wisconsin, recently earned a five-star rating as part of the Postal Service's "5 Star Customer Service Program." Ratings are based on the results of surveys conducted by the Gallup Organization.
Gallup surveyed USPS customers asking them to rate local post offices on efficiency, accuracy of delivery, consistency of delivery and the time that customers are required to wait in line. Post offices that received a significant increase in "excellent" ratings from one quarter to the next are recognized with the "5-Star Customer Service Award." Brainerd postmaster is David Fuchs.
Bellefeuille is Little Falls employee of the month
LITTLE FALLS - Jeneva Bellefeuille, Royalton, was named employee of the month for October by the Outstanding Service Committee with the Chamber of Commerce in Little Falls.
Bellefeuille is director of nursing at St. Otto's Care Center. She has been the director for 16 years. In her employer's comments, Bellefeuille was described as dedicated in helping residents and staff members with her direction and guidance for the department as the finest example of the positive impact someone can make.
Brainerd area resident is recognized in Florida
Chad Olson, a former Brainerd area resident, was recently recognized in Florida for his maintenance firm's donated work at the Safehouse at Seminole.
Olson, the son of Curly and Gwen Olson of Baxter, owns Mr. Handyman, a maintenance business that serves Debary, Lake Mary and Winter Springs in Florida.
The firm's technicians installed a chain link fence, weatherproofed a wood deck, painted and repaired doors and did other repairs.
Olson is a 1990 graduate of Brainerd High School.
'Scrambled Eggs' event planned in Crosby
CROSBY - The Cuyuna Range Chamber of Commerce is hosting a "Scrambled Eggs" networking event from 8-9 a.m. Oct. 21 at 'Ya Betcha's Bar & Grill in Crosby.
This month's topic will be "Today's Financial Impact on Area Businesses" with guest speakers from Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union. Christian Barnett, financial adviser, and David Borden, business services director, will share their insight of the U.S. economy.

Cass County EDC to host annual meeting
WALKER - The Cass County Economic Development Corp. plans to host its sixth annual meeting on Oct. 29 at the Chase Hotel in Walker.
The event begins with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and a keynote talk by Vin Weber, U.S. Congressman from 1981-1993. Weber's keynote address is "Moving Forward in Challenging Economic Times." The event includes project talks by two Cass County business owners and a short annual business meeting.
Trails RV Park and Ridgeline Manufacturing recently received assistance from the Cass County EDC. The owners, Dave Kaufman, from Trail's RV Park, and Jerry and Nick Newman, from Ridgeline Manufacturing, will talk about the development of their businesses and how the EDC provided coordination.
Ridgeline is a dock manufacturing company in Pillager and Trails RV Park is west of Walker.
Nisswa Women's Club meeting planned Oct. 15
NISSWA - The Nisswa Women's Club will hold its monthly membership meeting at noon Oct. 15, with a social time from 11:30 a.m. to noon, at the Timbermist Banquet Facility, Brainerd.
The program topic will be "Flowers and Such," presented by Burt Knandel.
Hostesses for the meeting are Deanna Frandsen, chair, Julaine Babcock, Pat Johnson, Shirley Benson, and Carole McChesney. The inspirational will be given by Mona Austin.
Power Limited course offered at CLC
The Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College, Brainerd, will host a continuing education course for holders of the Minnesota Power Limited Technician License from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 30.
The course covers requirements for eight hours of instruction. If you need to renew your license before Dec. 1, you will need to take an eight-hour course.
The course is taught by Riverland Community College at a cost of $160 (plus $82 for code books available in class).
The course will cover applicable articles and sections of the 2008 National Electrical Code, Minnesota Statutes and Rules governing electrical work, and a review of the basic elements of electricity and electrical calculations.
This course has been approved by the Minnesota State Board of Electricity. The deadline to register is Oct. 23.
