Flyers make stand at home
High school football
LITTLE FALLS - For the first time since Oct. 15, 2004, the Little Falls Flyers were able to celebrate a memorable victory at Memorial Field here. This time it was a 28-12 Central Lakes Conference triumph over the Fergus Falls Otters.

The win Friday night snapped a 19-game home losing streak and gave the Flyers a 3-2 conference record and 4-2 overall mark.

"This was huge," said the Flyers' Travis Stoerzinger. "It hasn't happened in a long time and it's huge. We knew what we needed to do to do it and we did it."

Pressure defense, plus mistake-free offense, was the Flyers' formula for success.

Little Falls rushed the ball 43 times for 255 yards and didn't attempt a pass. One reason for the lack of an aerial attack was the absence of starting quarterback Alex Scott, who was out with a concussion. The other reason was the Flyers were going to run the ball all night anyway.

"We didn't have to step out of our game plan even when Alex wasn't in there," said Flyers head coach Aaron Sinclair. "We're built around running the football. We just emphasized that a little bit more. We told our offensive line that they were going to win the game. It was going to be on their shoulders. They responded the way they needed to."

Zach Horejsi carried the ball on the game's first six plays before Cody Waldvogel busted through the line for a 47-yard touchdown run.

The Flyers' next possession covered 93 yards on 12 plays and was capped off by Horejsi's 14-yard burst.

After a Stoerzinger fumble recovery gave the Flyers the ball on their own 38, Horejsi scored again from three yards out for a 21-0 advantage. Horejsi rushed for 172 yards on 33 carries.

Little Falls didn't commit a penalty or turn the ball over. It only had two plays that went for negative yards with one of those a kneel-down to end the game.

"Our kids are excited about this, but it's what they expect now," said Sinclair. "The first win against Rocori the kids were like 'Finally, we won a game.' Now this is the expectation, which is really helpful. For a program that's a really big step for us."

Stoerzinger introduced himself to Otters quarterback Zach Rengel a number of times.

He sacked Rengel for an 11-yard loss in the second quarter and later in that quarter hurried the quarterback into throwing an interception that Brandon Hiemenz returned 48 yards, giving the Flyers a 28-6 halftime lead.

"It was a team effort on the defense," said Stoerzinger. "Getting pressure was a big part, but it was everybody. The turnovers were huge.

"It was big plays for the defense and the offense made big plays, too."

Stoerzinger finished with five tackles, three for a loss and the fumble recovery, which was caused by Hiemenz. Jeremy Primus also intercepted a pass, helping the Flyers match their season total for take-aways.

"I was giving our defensive coaches a hard time this last week about that," said Sinclair. "I hope we can continue that the next few weeks."
