Foundation awards $61K in grants
The Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation announced Wednesday it awarded more than $60,000 in grants to help 10 local nonprofits meet the growing needs of the area community.

The foundation's board of directors approved an additional $7,500 each to Bridges of Hope and the Salvation Army from the Spirit of Hope Fund to help the organizations assist families during increasingly difficult economic times.

The remaining $45,250 from the foundation's general fund supports a variety of community needs ranging from transportation costs for volunteer caregivers and a Christmas event for families in need to a community center and new reading program for young children.

This latest grant round brings the foundation's total grant awards to about $160,000 for the year. The foundation provided about $1.4 million in grants since it started in 1998. It is a public charity that attracts and administers charitable funds for the benefit of the residents of Crow Wing and southern Cass counties.

Nonprofit organizations, particularly those with programs focusing on youth, human services and that demonstrate community progress, are encouraged to apply for BLACF's general grants.

The local grant recipients from the general fund are:

¥ Brainerd Public School Foundation, $15,000, to create a part-time foundation coordinator and administrative resources position to facilitate the activities of various groups in fundraising and distributing funds to benefit students in the district.

¥ The Warehouse, $7,500, to increase the hours of service of the after-school program coordinator position. The Warehouse, operated by Riverview Church, is a community center that serves the needs of families, schools, churches and other community organizations in the Pine River-Backus area.

¥ Lutheran Social Services, $5,000, to assist in transportation costs for volunteers of the organization's caregiver and support program.

¥ Fathers Reading Every Day, $5,000, to expand the program into the Brainerd lakes area and provide ongoing support.
