ENTERTAINMENT SHORTS Folk trio Ruby Boots to sing in Staples
STAPLES - Ruby Boots, a trio of sisters originally from Staples, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Centennial Auditorium in Staples.

Dawn, Andrea and Heather grew up singing in the family gospel group, The Schimpps. The trio delivers a blend of folk, country and gospel backed by a band.

Luther College Band to perform Tuesday
LITTLE FALLS - The Luther College (Iowa) Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Martin Auditorium at Little Falls High School.

Conducted by Frederick Nyline, the 65-member Concert Band will play "American Overture for Band" by Joseph Wilcox Jenkins, Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," "Olympica" by Jan Van der Roost, "Tirana" by Carol Barnett, Copland's "Old American Songs," "Lily's Eyes" by Lucy Simon and "Finale" from Symphony No. 4 by Tschaikovsky.
A top college band for more than 125 years, the Luther College Concert Band was one of the nation's first music organizations to tour nationally and internationally. It has made numerous appearances on TV and radio.
Mille Lacs casino to host televised poker tour
ONAMIA - Grand Casino Mille Lacs north of Onamia will host the Heartland Poker Tour for the third time.
Qualifying rounds will be from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 20-21, the semifinal round will be at 8 a.m. Oct. 22 and the televised final round will be later that day.
Individuals can register by calling Grand Casino Mille Lacs at (800) 626-5825, ext. 8324, or by stopping by the River's Edge Poker Room in the casino. The entry fee is $300 per player, plus a $40 registration fee.
Up to 160 people may participate in each round, and the top 20 percent in each qualifier will advance to the semifinals. Players may directly buy into the semifinals for $1,700. The prize pool for the tournament is estimated at $175,000 and will be distributed to the top 30 finishers.
Angie Stevens, Coles Whalen to play at Eclectic
Former Brainerd resident Angie Stevens will perform with her band, the Beautiful Wreck, at 9 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Eclectic Cafe in downtown Brainerd. Coles Whalen will open the evening.
Admission is $10.
In August, Stevens released her dual EPs, "Stand Up Girl 1 & 2." She recently was named Denver's Best Singer/Songwriter by Westword, Colorado's largest alternative weekly newspaper.

Schmid to appear on 'Criminal Minds'
TALUCA LAKE, Calif. - Hollywood actor Tom Schmid, originally from Brainerd, will appear in the Nov. 1 episode of CBS' "Criminal Minds" (8 p.m. Wednesdays).
"This is a good one and it's also rather creepy," Schmid wrote on his Web site, www.tomschmid.com. "The unidentifiable man in the mask, in the shadows and leading the victims around is me."
Also, Schmid will appear in the Oct. 23 episode of Fox's "Vanished" (8 p.m. Mondays).
Kids Act schedules fall play
Kids Act Productions will present "Jack and the Magic Beanstalk," directed by Jennifer Pedersen, and Kids Skits' "How Does Your Garden Grow," directed by Mary Rude, at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 and 9-10 on the Kids Act Stage at Washington Educational Services Building.
The suggested donation for performances is $2. Call for seating reservations at (218) 330-8454.
Registration for the winter production will be from 4:30-6 p.m. Nov. 7 and 9-10 in Washington Educational Services Building, Room 305.
Madhatters to stage 'Death of a Doornail'
WADENA - Madhatters Community Theatre will present "Death of a Doornail," a dinner theater by Lee Mueller, Nov. 8 and 10-12 at the Wadena Elks Lodge. It also will be staged Nov. 16-19 at Perham Lakeside.
Tickets, priced at $22, will be available starting Oct. 23 at (218) 632-SHOW.
Directors are Michelle Curtis and Angie Reynolds. The cast includes Mark Hultman, Sherry Linnes, Kelly Popp, Cassy Popp, Micah Berger, Jeff Wuollet, Richard Ealy, Betty Schwartz, Tim Reynolds, Lisa Holm and Carissa Lowrey.
Stroia 'Nutcracker' date announced
Stroia Ballet's annual performance of "The Nutcracker" will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at Tornstrom Auditorium, Washington Educational Services Building, in Brainerd.

Brenda Lee to perform at casino
ONAMIA - Singer Brenda Lee, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, will perform at 3 and 7 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Grand Casino Mille Lacs Events & Convention Center north of Onamia.

Lee began her singing career at age 6. In 1956, she was signed to Decca Records by legendary producer Owen Bradley. At age 11, she appeared on Red Foley's "Ozark Jubilee," and she later appeared on the TV programs of Ed Sullivan, Steve Allen and Red Skelton.
Lee has appeared on the pop charts 100 times with classics such as "Sweet Nothins," "I'm Sorry" and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." She has starred in TV specials in Japan and Brazil and appeared at festivals in Spain, Northern Ireland and Germany.
Vacationland skaters advance
Members of Brainerd's Vacationland Figure Skating Club recently advanced in the United States Figure Skating ranks by testing before national judges.
Advancing skaters included Katie Benson, Rachel Pagarigan and Alyssa Nelson (Pre-Preliminary); Morgan Steffen (Pre-Preliminary and Preliminary Moves); Monica Vann (Preliminary Moves and Dutch Waltz); Stephanie Eckardt (Freeskate and Preliminary Dance); and Brandy Lewis (Juvenile Moves).
Eckardt, Lewis, Steffen and Mackenzie Renford recently represented the VFSC at the Star of the North Games and the Robin Lee Midwest Open. Lewis also participated in August's Skate St. Paul Competition and the Minnesota State Figure Skating Championships.
