Raiders roll with win
COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Central Lakes College volleyball coach doesn't get too excited on the sidelines, even when her team isn't playing its best. And the veteran coach of 14 seasons rarely ever raises her voice in anger.

So when Peterson took her team off the court after a game three loss to the Northland Pioneers Wednesday, she gave them an ear full.

"Jane yelled a little at us between the third and fourth games," Raiders outside hitter Krista Meyer said. "She doesn't like to yell so when she does we know she means business."

That ear full was what the Raiders needed as CLC went on to win the fourth game and the match, defeating the Pioneers 30-19, 30-19, 27-30, 30-25 for its eighth-straight North Division win.

"I'm not a good yeller," Peterson said. "I have to work myself up to yell at people. But we've been talking about being a championship team and tonight wasn't it. We won but that's not the way we should be winning, we should win with more desire.

"We talk about being a CLC volleyball player and when you walk in a gym players are afraid of you. But teams are also going to bring their best."

The Pioneers did just that in the third game as they used a 6-0 run to grab a 10-4 lead. But CLC answered with its own 6-0 run, led by two Krista Meyer kills and a kill by Megan Anderson to tie the game.

Northland opened a 24-19 and looked to close the door on the Raiders before they rallied again. CLC scored three straight points to trail 27-25 on kills by Jen Kempenich and Liz Boltz and a Pioneer error. The Raiders pulled to within 28-27 on another Meyer kill and another error but Northland won the game on two consecutive CLC errors.

Northland led most of the fourth game until CLC rattled off three straight points on an Anderson kill, a Meyer ace serve and a Kempenich kill to tie the game 22-22. The Raiders then took the lead for good on a Lisa Litke kill for a 24-23 lead.

Two Lisa Kurtz kills and two Pioneer errors wrapped up the win for CLC.

The key: Krista Meyer had 18 kills and Jen Kempenich chipped in with 12 as the Raiders won their eighth-straight division match.

North Division: CLC 8-1

Overall: CLC 16-3

Next: CLC at Hibbing 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Meyer had one of her best games of the season as she collected a game-high 18 kills to go along with a team-high 20 digs. Kempenich finished with 12 kills while Jenae Swanson handed out 24 set assists.

"Krista has been a very consistent player for us," Peterson said. "She's a good attacker, a good defensive player and a good passer. She's played on teams with big hitters so she came in thinking of herself as a defensive player. We're trying to get her to think more like an offensive player."

The Raiders (16-3 overall) are alone atop the division with a 7-1 record and travel to 6-2 Hibbing Friday. This is also the fourth-straight week CLC has occupied the top spot in the NJCAA Division III national poll.

Despite those accolades, Peterson doesn't feel her team is where it needs to be on a competitive level.

"There needs to be a more unified feeling on this team," said Peterson. "This team needs to decide if they really want to be that championship team. This team, at any time, can decide to be that team because the skill and talent is there. We're going to sit down and have a girl talk about it."

Notes

CLC setter Lisa Kurtz was named the NJCAA Division III national player of the week. Kurtz, a former Pierz standout, averaged 7.2 set assists, 4.8 digs and 3.6 kills in two wins last week. Against Mesabi Range Kurtz recorded the elusive triple double with 24 set assists, 24 digs and 14 kills.
