Hanson no stranger to reaching his goals
WARRIOR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
When Brainerd Warrior boys' soccer coach Cahil Collins was asked during a preseason story about a transfer student his immediate reply was, "He's eligible."

Collins can be excused if he was a little gun-shy after last season when a foreign exchange player was ruled ineligible, and the Warriors had to forfeit their first 12 games.

A year later, Collins' only regret is that Tyler Hanson, who moved to the lakes area from California with his family in January, will be with the program only one season.

Possibly one of the fastest players ever to wear a Warriors uniform, Hanson leads the team in scoring with 16 goals and four assists.

Speed helps Hanson zip to loose balls and run away from opposing defenders.

Tyler Hanson has excelled in soccer and football

"Tyler's very quick with the ball," Collins said. "In fact, many of the penalty kicks we've scored this year are because Tyler was in position and the only option the defense had was take him down or he would score."

Hanson has helped Brainerd win the first Central Lakes Conference title in program history and win 10 regular-season games for the first time.

"The team has worked hard to get here," he said. "The guys really wanted (the conference title). We talked about it a lot but you have to show it on the field."

He also helped the Warriors attain the highest Section 8-2A seed in program history (No. 2) and get a home section game for the first time at noon Saturday against Moorhead.

"We knew that would happen after losing to Apollo," Hanson said of receiving the No. 2 seed. "We really wanted (a home game). It's the first time ever so that's a good thing."

It's a good thing Hanson can also kick a football. He has made 13 of 15 extra points for the Brainerd football team, kicked a 28-yard field goal and averaged 46.4 yards per kickoff.

"I kick it with the side or the inside of my foot," Hanson said of kicking a football. "It's pretty much the same thing as a soccer ball. You're just trying to get the ball up in the air.

"The football team has brought me in as one of them. They're supportive of soccer. They come to my soccer games and support me in every way."

Warriors football coach Ron Stolski calls Hanson a "remarkable young man" who comes to football practice when it doesn't conflict with soccer.

"The thing that has struck me about Tyler is how conscientious he is," Stolski said. "He understands, and we understand, that soccer is his first responsibility, but he's also been so key to us, not just as a place-kicker, but as a kickoff guy who can place the ball in areas on the field."
