Dream season ends for Warriors girls' tennis with loss to Prowlers
There's a saying that says all good thing must come to an end.

Unfortunately, the end was now for the Brainerd girls' tennis team's perfect season as the Warriors fell to the Thief River Falls Prowlers 6-1 in the North Subsection 8-2A semifinals Wednesday in East Grand Forks.

Thief River Falls and the Bemidji Lumberjacks will advance to the Section 8-2A team tournament.

Kayla Huether picked up the lone Warrior win, defeating Kassie Sparby 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. The Prowlers then won the next three singles matches followed by a sweep of all three doubles matches.

Kayla Huether had the lone Warrior win

"We were the third seed and that's how it should've been because Thief River Falls is a very strong, and deep team," Warriors coach Marnie Whalen said. "They played well. We didn't play poorly. It's just that Thief River Falls was on their game. Their two, three and four singles players are all very good. We played well against Moorhead and had good start to beat them."

Huether also picked up a win over Moorhead's Emma Hughey as did Mikinzee Salo at No. 3 singles and Ashley Bostrom at No. 4. The doubles team of Natalie Reponen and Erica Mortensen won at No. 2 doubles followed by a win from Abby Ahlberg and Amber Arnoldy at No. 3.

Huether picked up the top seed at No. 1 singles in the subsection individual tournament, which begins today. Emily Nelson will play at No. 2 singles. The doubles team of Catherine Luckemeyer and Taylor Headlee and the team of Reponen-Mortensen will also play in the individual tournament.

Despite the loss, the Warriors enjoyed one of the most successful tennis seasons in recent memory, which included an undefeated regular season and Central Lakes Conference championship.

"We just had an incredible season," Whalen said. "Things fell into place and the kids kept surprising us match after match. We're very proud with the wins at St. Cloud Tech and beating Fergus Falls. I don't think I've ever had a season as a coach that's been this much fun.

"Even though we lose Abby, which is sad because she was our only senior, we come back with a strong team next year. We'll come back with experience and probably as the team to beat."
