Post office closed for Columbus Day

The Brainerd Post Office will operate on a holiday schedule Monday in observance of Columbus Day.

Postmaster David Fuchs said regular residential and business deliveries will not be made on Monday and usual post office lobby services will not be available, with the exception of post office lock box service.

Mail pick-up from the collection boxes also will be on a holiday schedule, as posted on individual boxes.

DFL candidates, office-holders invited to dinner

NISSWA - Area Democrats will have an opportunity to meet DFL candidates and office-holders when the Crow Wing and Cass County DFL units conduct their seventh annual fall dinner Oct. 24 at the Nisswa American Legion Club, 25807 Main St., Nisswa. Social hour/meet and greet is from 5 to 6 p.m., with dinner and the program beginning at 6 p.m.

Invited guests include Congressman Jim Oberstar and Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken. Featured guests include State Representatives John Ward (12A), Al Doty (12B) and Sen. Mary Olson (Senate District 4) as well as other candidates and state officials. All Democratic gubernatorial candidates, declared and undeclared, have been invited to attend; most have confirmed their attendance.

Seating is limited to 200. To make a reservation, those interested should send a $25 check to Crow Wing DFL Treasurer, P.O. Box 254, Brainerd MN 56401 By Thursday. Tickets will be $30 at the door if seats are available.

There will be a live auction and live jazz music.

"The dinner is meant to be a fun way for area Democrats and their friends to get together to discuss topics and ideas, but it also serves as a local stop on a candidate's campaign trail," said Marcia Ferris, Crow Wing Count DFL chair.

Brainerd Fire responds

The Brainerd Fire Department responded at 9:52 a.m. Friday to an elevator rescue at the Northstar Apartments, 511 D Street, Brainerd.

Upon arrival, it was learned that the person who was inside the elevator was able to get out.

The fire department also was called at 2:49 p.m. Friday to a crash involving four vehicles at Highway 210 and Golf Course Drive in Baxter. A call to firefighters was canceled en route and no other information was available Saturday.
