Calling all area students surrounding Brainerd: If you want to attend the Brainerd School District, you now can.
The Brainerd School Board on Monday agreed to reopen open enrollment for kindergarten through ninth grade, bringing open enrollment for all grades. In September, the board reinstated open enrollment for 10th, 11th and 12th grades. The district had previously closed open enrollment in kindergarten through 12th grade in December.
Willy Severson, director of schools, said the school district has some wiggle room for open enrollment. There's only been one request this year for open enrollment from a family moving into the Brainerd area, he said.
"We don't anticipate that we'll have a flood of students coming to open enroll," said Severson. "By opening open enrollment we're giving people moving to the area the choice to come here. We have some flexibility."
Enrollment as of Monday was 6,840 in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. Severson said the class size average is 27.36 students, with fourth grade at Baxter Elementary School at 31.5 students per classroom.
In other business, the board appointed Molly Krutzman to fill the school board seat vacated by Ruth Gmeinder. The board also appointed board member Ruth Nelson as vice chair and board member Bob Nystrom as clerk/treasurer for the remainder of the year. Gmeinder was vice chair of the board and Nelson was the clerk-treasurer.
Heard a $16,000 grant was awarded by the Initiative Foundation to the district's Early Childhood Coalition Follow-up project.
Hired Germaine Glieden-Lindquist as a Brainerd High School teacher.
Approved a cooperative agreement to give Pillager School District students the opportunity to participate in Brainerd's dance program. An agreement also was made to allow Pequot Lakes School District students the opportunity to participate in Brainerd's alpine and Nordic skiing programs for boys and girls. Each school would be charged a flat $500 fee per participant and will work with the families on how the fee would be paid.
Brainerd Superintendent Steve Razidlo said the district currently charges schools $380 per participant. Razidlo said students from other schools will not qualify for Warrior Way money for funding for the sports.
