Volleyball tournament at CLC to help cancer research
A four-team volleyball tournament at Central Lakes College in Brainerd will bring together three nationally ranked teams and leaders in Minnesota College Athletic Conference play Thursday.
Three of the four teams are ranked in the top seven in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III poll.
The Cheer for the Cure event has earmarked proceeds toward cancer cure research. This is the community service theme chosen by the CLC Raiders volleyball team for the season.
The Raiders and Hibbing share the North Division lead. Ridgewater leads the Southern Division with Rochester second.
Ridgewater is ranked fourth in NJCAA Division III, Rochester is No. 5 and Hibbing is seventh. CLC is receiving votes.
The Central Lakes College volleyball team will be outfitted in pink for Thursday's Cheer for the Cure fundraising tournament with Rochester, Ridgewater and Hibbing. Front row: Christine Malm (left), Megan Rakow. Back: Kayla Atkinson, Katie Amundson, Jenna Terhaar, coach Jane Peterson, Krystle Hamilton, Kirstie Grill, Erica Feldewerd.
This is a mini-crossover event, according to CLC coach Jane Peterson. She said that, each year at this time, CLC hosts schools not scheduled during the regular season, when teams compete within their own division of the MCAC.
The twist for Thursday follows a decision her team made - to contribute to a worthy cause. It stems from Peterson's encouragement.
"I had a friend who lost a battle with cancer," she said. "Finding a cure is an important issue for so many."
Team members are selling pink CLC volleyball T-shirts for $10. Half of each sale goes to cancer research.
"And we will be donating a portion of our gate receipts that day and collecting any donations for the American Cancer Society," Peterson said. "We plan to have special pink ribbon cookies as well."
Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for students. CLC students will be admitted free. Donations beyond the admission price are welcome, Peterson said.
All four teams will wear something pink.
"Our team will be wearing pink uniforms provided by Under Armour," Peterson said.
Mar-Jon's Sportswear will be at the event to promote Under Armour's Power in Pink clothing. Profits from those sales also go to causes focused on preventing and curing cancer.
"Under Armour and Mar-Jon's are donating $500 on behalf of the CLC volleyball team to the Susan G. Komen Foundation," said Chuck Rodgers, territory manager for Under Armour.
"This is a good cause and gives us a chance to also recognize the fine volleyball program that we have at Central Lakes College," said Clem Belcher, owner of Mar-Jon's Sportswear in the Westgate Mall.
