The American Red Cross finds itself long on need and short on money in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo and the San Francisco Bay earthquake. Cathy Gray, local Red Cross coordinator, says no disaster relief funds have come in as yet.

Contempt of court orders are being prepared today in St. Paul against five Brainerd aldermen who did not reconsider their decision to oppose fluoridation of the city's water at a special meeting last evening. The judge has not revealed what penalties he'll impose.

Aitkin High School won over the Brainerd Blue and White 7 to 6 at football yesterday before a large crowd attending Aitkin's civic improvement celebration. Hoffbauer brought the only Brainerd score when he speared a beautiful 40-yard pass.
100 years ago (1909)
The board of education met last evening to consider the closing of two more rooms, thus dispensing with the services of four teachers compared to last year. The rate for substitute teachers was set at from $2.50 to $3 per day, depending on grade level.
