Hibbing downs Raiders in region playoff COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
HIBBING - Despite Rachel Pfeffer's 29 set assists and seven digs and Kirstie Grill's 10 kills the Central Lakes College volleyball team lost a close 3-0 matchup against Hibbing on Saturday that decided the host of the Region 13B tournament Oct. 31.
The game was the result of a regular-season tie between the teams, necessitating Saturday's playoff game.
"It's a hard game to lose when you can see by the scores that it was very close," Raiders coach Jane Peterson said. "We were never way behind and never way ahead throughout all three games.
"I think that it comes down to the experience that some of Hibbing's players have from last year. That just seemed to help them this game. I don't know if it's a will to win or mental toughness that we just don't have all the time."
After the loss, in order for CLC to advance to the region tournament it must be the highest North Division finisher, other than Hibbing, in next weekend's MCAC state tournament at Thief River Falls. The Raiders will play their first match at 10 a.m. Saturday against Fergus Falls.
"People expect to have success every year because we have a history here, but every team is new and every team has its own struggles," Peterson said. "If we can qualify for the region tournament through our state tournament we can play Hibbing again and I think from the way we played them Saturday they might be a little scared if we face them again.
"We missed an opportunity Saturday but we can make up for it if we come together and play well in our remaining games."
