Aitkin second in 7-1A Area girls' tennis
VIRGINIA - After a grueling semifinal win against Foley, Anna Browning, Tori Sundholm and the Aitkin Gobblers ran into a wall against the Virginia Blue Devils in the Section 7-1A championship dual meet Monday.
Browning defeated Foley's Emily Marquette 6-4, 6-4 and Sundholm beat Alexa Herbst 6-3, 6-4, but both were defeated by their Virginia counterparts as the Blue Devils won the team championship 7-0.
All Aitkin doubles teams, Allie Carlson-Kaitlyn Davies, Megan Rubbelke-Elizabeth Matson, and Hannah Spicer-Brittany Searle, scored semifinal wins, but were defeated in the championship dual by Virginia.

Three Staples-Motley Cardinals advance
COLLEGEVILLE - Staples-Motley's Abby Edin didn't surrender a set as she defeated Sarah Wagner (West Central) and Brianne Giesler (Osakis), both by 6-0, 6-0 scores, in the Section 6-1A individual tournament Monday at St. John's University.
Edin will be joined at St. John's for Tuesday's individual championships by the Cardinals' doubles team of Skye Coughlin-Emma Koskiniemi, who surrendered just one set in their semifinal round against Kelsey Warren-Kayla Sjobeck of Parkers Prairie.

HIBBING - Tricia Villella and the No. 1 doubles team of Kirstie Harmdierks-Cori Lundmark won matches for Pequot Lakes in a 5-2 loss to Virginia in the semifinals of the Section 7-1A team tournament Monday.
"We played very well," Patriots coach Monica Sergent said. "Virginia has a really strong team. I'm proud of how our girls played. It's always tough to see a good (team) season come to a close."
