LOCAL BRIEFS Brainerd organizing code review task force
The Brainerd City Council is seeking applicants for an Ordinance Review Task Force.
Seven citizens are needed to provide recommendations to the city council on zoning ordinances and municipal code requirements and the ordinance and code enforcement process. Two planning commission and two city council members also are part of the task force.
The city council has requested a task force report in six months. Task force meetings are planned to occur 4 p.m. Tuesdays at Brainerd City Hall. The first meeting is scheduled for Nov. 22. The task force will determine dates of future Tuesday meetings at its first meeting.
Letters of interest should be mailed to the city administrator's office at 501 Laurel St. or e-mailed to admin@ci.brainerd.mn.us. Letters of interest need to be submitted by Nov. 2 with appointments planned at the Nov. 7 city council meeting.

Sanda appointed to Metropolitan Council
Kris Sanda, a former resident of Staples, was appointed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty to the Metropolitan Council this week.
Sanda, who now lives in Blaine, served as director of the Office of Consumer Services from 1979-1983 under Gov. Al Quie and as commissioner of the Department of Public Service from 1991-1999 under Gov. Arne Carlson. She also served as a member of the Board of Medical Practice under Govs. Jesse Ventura and Pawlenty.
In recent years, Sanda has served on Blaine's Transportation Committee and the Metropolitan Council's Transportation Advisory Board. She has served as president of the Minnesota Lutheran Social Service Foundation, a consumer representative on the Medica Board and vice president of the St. Paul chapter of the American Red Cross.
The Metropolitan Council coordinates planning and development in the seven-county metropolitan area.
Two lakes area teachers receive state honor
Two Brainerd lakes area teachers were among 16 other state educators to be named regional honorees for 2005 by the Center for Academic Excellence at the WEM Foundation Outstanding Educator Award brunch in Bloomington.
Billie Elavsky of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley High School received the Academic Coach of the Year honor. Beth Swenson of the Brainerd School District received the Teacher Achievement honor.
Rotary grants announced
The Brainerd Rotary Foundation recently awarded several grants.
The following organizations were awarded grants: County 4-H Achievement Programs, PORT Group Homes, Lakeland Public Television-children's programming, Kids Voting Program, Timber Bay youth programs, Kinship Partners youth programs, Sharing Bread Soup Kitchen, Women's Center of Mid-Minnesota-youth recreational equipment, Crisis Line-Prevent Teen Suicide, Alex and Brandon Child Center-youth supplies, Mounted Eagles Inc.-youth at-risk programs, youth literacy programs and Heartland Symphony Orchestra-youth outreach program.
The mission of the Brainerd Rotary Foundation is to assist in providing financial support for activities designed to offer personal and educational opportunities for area youth. The board meets quarterly in January, April, July and October to review requests. The funding year is from July 1 through June 30 of each year. To request an application, write to P.O. Box 132.
