Sister city to finally get replica of city water tower
Associate Editor Leksand, Sweden, is finally getting a replica of Brainerd's water tower.
Brainerd's sister city since 1988, the Swedish town has sent representatives to Minnesota and presented Brainerd officials with gifts to display, but there's been no official visit from Brainerd city officials.
Mayor James Wallin had expressed a desire to travel there but canceled a trip a few years back because concerns were raised about budgetary considerations.
When two Brainerd area women, Marlene Larson and Char Wayt, told Wallin they planned to visit the city on their own, he asked them to present Leksand officials with a replica of Brainerd's historic water tower made out of obsidian rock.
Larson, who described her visit as a semi-official goodwill tour, said the Brainerd Lakes Area Chambers of Commerce also asked the couple to present Leksand with a pottery wall hanging. The two women will leave for Europe later this month.
Larson was co-owner of the Skandihus Gift Shop on Eighth Street from 1976-1985. She's one-quarter Swedish and three-quarters Norwegian. She said Wayt's ancestors hail from a community just north of Leksand.
