Reese joins Lakewood Health System
STAPLES - Morgan Reese, respiratory therapist, has joined Lakewood Health System.
Reese's addition brings the total number of respiratory therapists to three.
Reese is a 2009 graduate of the University of Mary and St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, N.D. While graduating with top honors, Reese was also a Certified Schafer Leader by the Harold Shafer Emerging Leaders Academy, an ambassador and peer mentor for the University of Mary, and named Collegiate All-American Scholar.
During her schooling at St. Alexius Medical Center, Reese practiced in multiple respiratory therapy roles, including pulmonary function testing, sleep lab, pulmonary rehabilitation and general respiratory therapy practice.
Stalberger joins The Cut Above
Erica Stalberger joined The Cut Above in Brainerd.
Stalberger previously worked and managed a salon in Thief River Falls. She has extensive experience in cutting the latest trends and is an accredited Redken hair color specialist with abilities in formulating and color design.
AccountAbility Solutions gains recognition
AccountAbility Solutions, Brainerd, was recognized for its second year of participation in the Business Gives Program.
Businesses earn this recognition by giving more than 2 percent of pre-tax earnings for charitable and community involvement activities. Yvonne Leiser, certified management accountant, joins with other small and medium-sized business owners throughout Minnesota in working to solve community problems and address community issues. AccountAbility Solutions provides QuickBooks and payroll support and training in the lakes area.
Nayquonabe receives SCSU GOLD award
ONAMIA - Joe Nayquonabe, corporate vice president of marketing for Grand Casino Mille Lacs and Grand Casino Hinckley, received St. Cloud State University's Graduate of the Last Decade award at a banquet on Oct. 9.
The Graduate of the Last Decade Award recognizes undergraduate alumni of the past decade who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their professions or in service to the university and/or community.
John Dunkley, commissioner of administration for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, nominated Nayquonabe for the award. Dunkley said Nayquonabe demonstrated a strong drive to succeed while supporting and encouraging those he works with, along with exibiting leadership, integrity and bringing forth enthusiasm, new ideas and dedication to his work.
At Grand Casino, the 27-year-old Nayquonabe oversees the central marketing efforts for both Grand Casino Mille Lacs and Grand Casino Hinckley. This also includes oversight of Grand Casinos' Brooklyn Park office that focuses on marketing efforts in the Twin Cities. Prior to his move to central marketing, Nayquonabe worked as the director of marketing for Grand Casino Mille Lacs.
Nayquonabe spoke at the Global Gaming Expo conference in November in Las Vegas about managing and marketing casino slot hosts.
Most recently, Nayquonabe was named a 2009 Forty under 40 award honoree by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. He was the youngest of 211 candidates to be nominated for this award which is given annually to 40 people under the age of 40 who have been successful in their careers and communities.
Torres joins Riverwood Healthcare
AITKIN - Riverwood Healthcare Center, Aitkin, announced Holly Torres has been named chief financial officer.
Torres, an Aitkin resident, most recently was chief financial officer for a civil engineering firm called EEC in Tucson, Ariz. She started her career at Ernst & Young, a national accounting firm, in the health care division, next working for CIGNA Healthcare as a contract administrator. She then went on to become finance and operations director for a community health center in rural Arizona, where she managed the financial and administrative operations and oversaw the construction of a new clinic and expansion of primary and specialty care services.
Torres has a bachelor's degree in business administration and accounting and finance from the University of Arizona, Tucson. She has served as a board member of the Tucson chapter of Institute of Management Accountants.
Lippert receives Schluender scholarship
The first scholarship from the Steve Schluender Memorial Scholarship Fund at Central Lakes College has been awarded to Jackson Lippert, Willmar.
A 2008 graduate from Willmar High School, Jackson carries a 3.5 grade point average and is in his second year in the Heavy Equipment Operator Maintenance program at CLC.
The Steve Schluender Memorial Fund was created in May 2009 by his wife, Wendy, and family. He was an instructor in the Heavy Equipment program on the Staples west campus for 26 years and passed away in January 2009 of cancer.
The Central Lakes College Foundation continues to receive donations in Steve Schluender's memory from his former students and business contacts.
Steve had a firm commitment to seeing students attain their dreams of a successful career in the construction industry, said Diane Scearcy, executive director of the Foundation. He was instrumental in acquiring funding for the program, particularly the west campus shop expansion. The donations represent the great rapport and admiration he had from his students and the industry.
The endowment fund currently exceeds $26,000. The Schluender family donated $1,500 to provide immediate scholarship funding for this school year.
Grunewald, Wiltse receive white coats
Justin Grunewald, Merrifield, and Cara Wiltse, Brainerd, were among 60 first-year medical students receiving white coats.
The University of Minnesota Medical SchoolÐDuluth students received their first white lab coats and took the oath of humanism for medical students. The inspirational event was conducted in the Weber Music Hall on the UMD campus with a reception immediately afterwards in the Medical School atrium.
Almost 400 people, including families of the students, area physicians and alumni and other dignitaries attended the event. The program was hosted by Gary L. Davis, senior associate dean, University of Minnesota Medical SchoolÐDuluth Campus and organized by Lillian Repesh, associate dean for admissions and student affairs.
Deerwood Technologies earns CompTIA Security Trustmark
DEERWOOD - The Computing Technology Industry Association, the leading trade association for world's information technology industry, announced Deerwood Technologies was awarded the CompTIA Security Trustmark for its IT security business capabilities and processes.
The CompTIA Security Trustmark validates that Deerwood Technologies uses security processes identified by the IT industry as generally accepted best practices for service and support business competencies for technology solution providers.
To attain the CompTIA Security Trustmark, Deerwood Technologies was independently audited by IT security experts.

Lakewood Health to host breast cancer awareness event
STAPLES - Lakewood Health System, Staples, will be hosting a free event entitled HealthBEAT For Her: Knowledge is Power at 5 p.m. Thursday in the classrooms at Lakewood Health System's Main Campus classrooms in recognition of breast cancer awareness month.
The American Cancer Society cites that one in eight women who reach the age of 80 will develop breast cancer during their lifetime.
At Knowledge is Power, two Lakewood Health System specialists; Dr. Sandra Hanson, surgeon, and Dr. John Weitz, oncologist will discuss the newest technologies in breast cancer diagnostics and treatments. Participants will also hear breast self-exams are pivotal in preventing breast cancer and the importance of clinical breast exams and mammograms.
Staff members from the SAGE program, which provides reduced-cost and free mammograms to underinsured or noninsured women who qualify, will be available Thursday to help participants apply for SAGE services.
Participants are encouraged to wear pink clothing in support of United for Pink Day, a Lakewood Health System fundraiser to support its breast cancer patients. Pink Mardi-Gras beads will be distributed during the event to help celebrate the cause.

Little Falls Chamber to host Trick or Treating
LITTLE FALLS - The Little Falls Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting preschool and elementary age school children to Trick or Treating from 3:30-5 p.m. Oct. 30. Participating businesses will display a pumpkin on their door or window.

Manufacturers invited to appreciation luncheon
All area manufacturers are invited to attend a Manufacturers Appreciation Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Central Lakes College, Staples Campus.
The event includes Jump Starting Our Economy with David Olson, Minnesota Chamber of Commerce president. The event includes business networking opportunities and tours of Stern Manufacturing and Central Lakes College Manufacturing Trades Programs.
Minnesota Manufacturer's Week is designed to showcase Minnesota's diverse manufacturing industry, raise legislative and public awareness of the importance of manufacturing, highlight the impact of manufacturing in our own communities and regions and to honor area manufacturers.

Culver's raises funds for MADD
Culver's restaurant in Baxter raised funds for Mother's Against Drunk Drivers during a two week campaign.
Between Sept. 25 and Oct. 11, Culver's raised $216 for MADD.
Grand Casino offers free meal for military
ONAMIA - On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, Grand Casino Mille Lacs and Grand Casino Hinckley will offer veterans and active service men and women a free lunch at the Grand Buffet in appreciation of their service.
Military personnel need to show a military ID card between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to receive the free buffet.
Deron Dunkley, commissioner of corporate affairs for the Corporate Commission of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe said its an event that helps the local community come together to thank veterans and active service members and is a small way to show appreciation for their services.
