AITKIN - Angela Phillips and DeAnn Thurner, Riverwood Healthcare Center nurses, are this year's recipients of Riverwood Foundation's Michael Zilverberg Healthcare Education Scholarship.
Each has received an award of $1,000 to support their pursuit of advanced nursing education.
Phillips and Thurner were selected by Riverwood Foundation's Finance and Granting Committee based on a written application detailing their experience and achievements in the nursing field, and a narrative describing what they want to accomplish as a result of their education. Reference letters from their supervisors were also a key factor in the selection process.
Phillips has worked as a licensed practical nurse in Riverwood's Aitkin clinic for about 10 months and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in nursing through a program offered by Indiana State University. Thurner is also a LPN who is pursuing a registered nurse degree at Central Lakes College, and has worked in Riverwood Healthcare Center for about a year, in the medical surgery area.
"This is the third round of Zilverberg Fund scholarship awards," Shelli Urness, Riverwood Foundation director, said in a news release. "We had a high number of well-qualified applicants this year, and the decision was hard to make. Both Angela and DeAnn had excellent recommendation letters from their managers, detailing their commitment to Riverwood and our values."
The Michael Zilverberg Healthcare Education Endowment was started by Jeanette Zilverberg in 2004 to honor her late husband Michael, who was a strong community leader in Aitkin. Always supportive of education and helping others, he was especially interested in providing educational opportunities and scholarships for those working in healthcare at Riverwood.
