Little Falls council votes to make city a quiet zone
Staff Writer Residents in Little Falls will experience a quieter atmosphere beginning Nov. 14.
The Little Falls City Council voted unanimously Monday to make the city a train whistle quiet zone. The city directed the BNSF Railway to stop sounding horns on trains within the city, effective Nov. 14.
Little Falls Administrator Richard Carlson said the city received two petitions of 50 residents who were in favor of the quiet zone. Two residents spoke in favor and one person spoke in opposition Monday of the quiet zone.
About 35 people attended the meeting. By a show of hands of those opposed to the quiet zone, only two people responded, said Carlson.
The council conducted a public hearing on establishing a train whistle quiet zone on July 31 and the issue had to sit for a 60-day comment period. The city received a comment letter from the railroad that expressed concern about safety, noting a Sept. 9 train and pedestrian fatality at the Broadway railroad crossing. In the letter, the railroad said it does not feel the notice of intent is valid or compliant with its Final Horn Rule.
In other city business, the council adopted an ordinance regulating dangerous and potentially dangerous animals.
