History behind naming of city
City Editor What's in a name?
In the case of Chickamaw Beach, there's a rich, interesting history.
In a November 2000 letter to Jeannette Silbaugh, a longtime friend and current city clerk, Frank Thompson, the first mayor of the city and former owner of Sky Harbor Lodge, explained the origin of the city name. Thompson started the move to incorporate as a village.
Thompson wrote, "What to name a new village? This was significant because it would appear on maps, records, etc. The lake's name already honored the Norwegians and I thought an Indian name would be attractive and gain attention."
Thompson said he consulted Bryon Graves, a teacher in Pine River and an American Indian whose father was a chief of the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
"We came across the word Chickamaw, which in the language of the Chippewa meant 'on the shore.' It perfectly suited our village. I added the word 'Beach' to make it more English literate and that, Jeannette, is how we all became citizens of the incorporated village of Chickamaw Beach, Minn."
