Ward 4 candidates agree on key points for neighborhood
The candidates for the Brainerd City Council Ward 4 seat have more in common than not when discussing what's important for their southeast Brainerd neighborhoods and the city at large.

Appearing Thursday at the Brainerd Lakes Area Chambers of Commerce candidate forum at Brainerd High School, incumbent Anne Nelson Fisher and challengers Lynda Hummel and Julie Sullivan all agreed that it's important to have a good relationship with department heads; that residents should be encouraged to call council members at home anytime they have a concern; that the cost of improving downtown Brainerd should be shared by downtown property owners and taxpayers; and that though there is a concern with crime in the city, they feel safe in their southeast Brainerd neighborhoods.

And each feels they are the best candidate to represent southeast Brainerd on the city council.

Hummel said she has lived in Brainerd all her life and is very proud of the city.

"I will work very hard to make the city what it was and the best it can be," Hummel said.

Julie Sullivan said every place she has lived she felt she should give back to her community. She said now is her time to do that. She said Brainerd needs to be fiscally responsible and proactive in its vision as well as in cleaning up neighborhoods and improving downtown - the one thing Brainerd has that Baxter doesn't.

"I will be the candidate that will listen, research and answer your problems," said Sullivan. "I don't have a problem standing up and saying what I feel."

Fisher pointed to a five-point platform in her re-election bid: maintaining economic health; providing good, safe housing; improving mass transit and roads; updating land-use ordinances; and continued development of parks and trails.

"My experience over the last four years makes me the most informed candidate," said Fisher.
